NTR District Cracks Down on Sankranti Cockfights, Warns of Legal Action
NTR District Bans Cockfights During Sankranti Festival

The administration of NTR district in Andhra Pradesh has issued a stern warning against the organization of or participation in cockfights during the upcoming Sankranti festival. District Collector Dr G Lakshmisha has made it clear that any violations will result in strict legal action and criminal prosecution.

High-Level Meeting Sets Strict Directives

Dr Lakshmisha chaired a crucial meeting at the collectorate on Wednesday to outline the enforcement strategy. She directed all village, mandal, and divisional-level committees, which were formed following high court orders, to immediately intensify their public awareness campaigns. The collector emphasized the need for active involvement from public representatives in these efforts.

Gram Sabhas will be specifically organized to educate communities about the legal provisions and the serious consequences of being involved in cockfighting. The objective is to ensure the message reaches every corner of the district.

Legal Ramifications and Vigilance Measures

Dr Lakshmisha categorically stated that cockfighting is a punishable offence. She warned that cases will be registered under Section 10 of the Andhra Pradesh Gaming Act, 1974, and Section 34 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 against anyone found violating the ban.

She instructed committees headed by Village Revenue Officers, Tahsildars, and Revenue Divisional Officers to remain on high alert. These teams have been tasked with conducting regular inspections across the district to prevent any cockfight events from taking place. The collector also advised officials to consider inputs from animal welfare associations while designing and implementing preventive measures.

Animal Welfare Fortnight and School Initiatives

In a related move to foster compassion, the district will observe an Animal Welfare Fortnight from January 14 to 31. This period will see coordinated programs involving various animal welfare organisations and officials from the revenue, education, panchayat raj, and municipal departments.

A variety of awareness activities are planned, including:

  • Public discussions and rallies.
  • Student competitions in essay writing, elocution, and quizzes.
  • Public speaking events focused on animal welfare.

Dr Lakshmisha also proposed the establishment of 'kindness clubs' in schools to instill a sense of empathy and care for animals among young students from an early age.

The meeting saw participation from key officials including District Animal Husbandry Officer Dr M Hanumantha Rao, ZP CEO K Kannamanayudu, DPO P Lavanyakumari, DEO L Chandrakala, along with representatives from animal welfare organisations, police, and various other departments.
