Nagpur Municipal Corporation Subject Committee Elections Concluded Unopposed

After a significant delay of nearly one-and-a-half months, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) finally conducted elections for its various subject committees on Friday. The process, which had been postponed, saw a smooth conclusion as all nine committees received only single nominations for both chairperson and deputy chairperson positions, resulting in all candidates being elected unopposed.

BJP's Continued Focus on Women Empowerment

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has maintained its consistent approach of empowering women corporators within the municipal framework. Prior to these elections, the party had already entrusted key positions such as mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairperson, and transport committee chairperson to women representatives. Extending this strategy further, all ten subject committees were also allocated exclusively to women corporators.

The names of the proposed chairpersons were formally announced during a special general body meeting held in the last week of February. Given the BJP's clear numerical advantage in the corporation, the elections were widely anticipated to be a mere formality and proceeded exactly as expected without any contest.

Newly Elected Chairpersons and Their Committees

The newly elected chairpersons, who will now lead their respective subject committees, are as follows:

  • Ashwini Jichkar – Public Works & Projects Committee
  • Manisha Atakre – Medical Services & Health Committee
  • Nidhi Telgote – Law Committee
  • Santoshdevi Laddha – Education Committee
  • Rutika Masram – Slum Eradication & Housing Committee
  • Darshani Dhawad – Sports Committee
  • Sarika Nandurkar – Women & Child Welfare Committee
  • Divya Dhurde – Water Supply Committee
  • Sarita Kavre – Tax Assessment & Collection Committee

Deferred Election for Fire Services Committee

One committee, however, did not see its election take place. The chairpersonship of the Fire Services Committee had been allotted to former mayor Maya Ivante. However, following her recent nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the election for this particular committee has been postponed to a later date. This deferral marks the only exception in an otherwise fully concluded electoral process for the subject committees.

The unopposed elections underscore the BJP's dominant position in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and its ongoing commitment to promoting women leadership in local governance. The newly appointed chairpersons are expected to assume their responsibilities immediately, overseeing critical municipal functions ranging from infrastructure and health to education and taxation.
