NDA Candidates in Assam Set for Unopposed Rajya Sabha Election After Nomination Validation

In a significant political development, the nomination papers of all three National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Assam have been declared valid following official scrutiny on Friday. This validation virtually guarantees their unopposed election to the three available seats, marking a smooth procedural victory for the ruling coalition.

Scrutiny Confirms Candidacy Validity

Returning officer Rajib Bhattacharya confirmed the outcome, stating, "The papers of all three candidates are valid. Their victory will be formally declared only after the last date of withdrawal on March 9." The candidates include BJP leaders Jogen Mohan and Terash Gowala, along with United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) chief Pramod Boro, who submitted their nomination papers on Thursday, the final day for filings.

Opposition Absence and Electoral Implications

With only these three candidates in contention for the three Rajya Sabha seats, the scheduled polling on March 16 will not be necessary. The opposition parties opted not to field any candidates, primarily due to a lack of sufficient numerical strength in the Assam Legislative Assembly to mount a competitive challenge. This absence underscores the NDA's dominant position in the state's political landscape.

The unopposed election process highlights the strategic alignment and organizational efficiency of the NDA in securing these seats without contest. It also reflects the broader political dynamics in Assam, where the alliance has maintained a stronghold, leveraging its assembly majority to streamline such electoral outcomes.

As the March 9 withdrawal deadline approaches, the formal declaration of victory is anticipated to be a mere formality, solidifying the NDA's representation in the Rajya Sabha from Assam. This development is poised to reinforce the coalition's legislative influence and policy-making capabilities at the national level.
