NCP Secures Fourth Consecutive Term in Pune Zilla Parishad Elections

The Nationalist Congress Party has achieved a decisive victory in the Pune Zilla Parishad elections, capturing 51 out of 73 seats in a remarkable display of political strength. This electoral triumph comes just weeks after the sudden and tragic passing of senior leader Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28, with analysts attributing much of the success to a significant wave of public sympathy.

Strategic Campaign and Emotional Mandate

Despite the devastating loss of their key strategist, NCP managed to secure the rural governing body for a fourth straight term, reaffirming its enduring dominance across rural Pune. This region is home to one of India's largest industrial clusters, making the political control particularly significant. The mandate highlighted NCP's extensive grassroots network and strategic coordination, which received quiet backing from members of NCP (SP) in several pockets.

Analysts emphasized that these Zilla Parishad polls were crucial for NCP following significant setbacks in the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation elections. Determined to reclaim political ground, Ajit Pawar had personally overseen the campaign strategy before his untimely demise, holding numerous meetings to finalize candidates for both ZP and panchayat samiti seats.

Ticket Distribution Strategy Yields Results

Party insiders revealed that Ajit Pawar prioritized "winnability, social representation and grassroots connect" in ticket distribution, even at the cost of denying seats to long-serving loyalists and sitting members. Though controversial initially, this decision appeared to have yielded substantial electoral gains according to party sources.

The campaign suffered a major setback after Ajit Pawar's passing, forcing candidates to suspend campaigning for several days. Some candidates turned to innovative methods, including AI-generated audio and video messages to reach out to voters during this difficult period.

"This strategy made a huge impact. People voted to honour Ajitdada's memory and the results clearly show that," said Maval MLA Sunil Shelke, who led the party to a clean sweep of all ZP and panchayat samiti seats in Maval. This area was once considered BJP's only stronghold in Pune district.

A visibly emotional Shelke added, "We are still struggling to accept the loss. This victory reflects the deep affection people have for Ajitdada."

Political Landscape and Opposition Performance

The Pune Zilla Parishad, recognized as the wealthiest in Maharashtra with an annual budget of approximately Rs 250 crore, has 73 seats representing various tehsils. While NCP dominated the results, BJP made modest gains by winning 10 seats, an improvement from seven in the previous 2017 elections.

Shiv Sena (UBT) delivered an unexpected performance with six seats, driven largely by its success in Khed tehsil represented by MLA Babaji Kale. Five of these victories came specifically from Khed, a region where NCP (undivided) had maintained control for nearly three decades.

A senior NCP member attributed the losses in Khed to poor ticket selection, stating that "former MLA Dilip Mohite ignored strong contenders, including ex-ZP president Nirmala Pansare, and fielded his nephew instead, who lost by a wide margin. Poor choices cost us the region."

Struggles for Other Political Parties

Congress failed to secure even a single seat in the district during the ZP elections. Party insiders cited organizational collapse following the exit of senior leaders Sanjay Jagtap and Sangram Thopte to BJP, with one Congress functionary remarking that "this outcome was inevitable."

Shiv Sena also struggled significantly, winning only four seats despite having a sizeable rural base. A senior leader acknowledged internal dissatisfaction, explaining that "tickets were awarded based on convenience rather than merit, pushing loyal cadres to back rival candidates."

In Daund tehsil, BJP MLA Rahul Kul failed to put up a strong show, with the party losing five seats to NCP candidates and retaining only one. Former MLA and long-time rival Ramesh Thorat once again demonstrated his enduring influence, underscoring the constantly shifting political dynamics of the region.

Panchayat Samiti Elections Results

In the parallel panchayat samiti elections, NCP emerged as the dominant force, winning nine of 13 samitis. In Bhor and Junnar tehsils, NCP and rival parties ended in a tie, reflecting closely fought contests. Khed Panchayat Samiti was secured by Shiv Sena (UBT), while BJP clinched victory in Daund.

The comprehensive electoral performance demonstrates NCP's continued political resilience in rural Maharashtra, particularly in the strategically important Pune district, while highlighting the complex interplay of sympathy, strategy, and local political dynamics that shaped this significant electoral outcome.
