The political landscape of Nashik is set for a significant shift as the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) gears up to elect its new mayor and deputy mayor this Friday. This event marks the city's first mayoral appointment in nearly four years, bringing an end to a prolonged period without a formal civic leadership structure. The election is being closely watched due to its potential implications for local governance and upcoming development projects, particularly those related to the Kumbh Mela.
Political Dynamics and Majority Strength
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enters this electoral contest with a commanding position, holding a clear majority in the 122-member House. With 72 corporators under its belt, the party's dominance is unmistakable. The Shiv Sena follows with 26 corporators, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction has 15 members. Other parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) with 4, Congress with 3, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) with 1, and one independent corporator, complete the political composition of the House.
BJP has nominated Himgauri Aher for the prestigious mayor's position, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) has put forward Seema Pawar as its contender. For the deputy mayoral race, BJP has selected senior corporator Machhindra Sanap, whereas Shiv Sena has introduced a trio of candidates: Vilas Shinde, Pravin Tidme, and Rahul Dive. This multi-candidate approach from Shiv Sena adds an intriguing layer to the deputy mayor contest.
Strategic Alliances and Political Maneuvering
Despite BJP contesting the civic polls independently while its Mahayuti partners—Shiv Sena and NCP—fought jointly, current political analyses suggest potential collaboration between these parties for the crucial upcoming elections. A source within BJP revealed that the party has taken meticulous steps to ensure unity among its corporators, including relocating them to a confidential location to prevent any possibilities of cross-voting. These members will be escorted to the NMC headquarters just one hour before polling commences.
While BJP is virtually assured of securing the mayor's post, insiders indicate that the deputy mayor position might be offered to Shiv Sena as a strategic goodwill gesture. This move aims to reinforce cooperation among Mahayuti allies and foster political stability within the House. If this understanding materializes, Shiv Sena (UBT), as the third-largest party, is expected to secure the Leader of the Opposition role. Such a distribution of responsibilities could facilitate smoother execution of development work, especially projects linked to the Kumbh Mela.
Decision-Making and Alliance Prospects
Shiv Sena deputy leader and NMC group leader Ajay Boraste emphasized that the final decision regarding support for BJP will be made by party chief and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Boraste stated, "If our party chief approves an alliance with BJP under the Mahayuti banner in NMC, we will secure the deputy mayor's post. We anticipate clear directions by 10 AM on Friday, and all corporators have been instructed to attend a meeting at the party office in the morning."
He further clarified that the selection of the deputy mayor candidate from Shiv Sena would also be determined by the party leadership if the alliance is finalized. Additionally, Shiv Sena has formed an alliance with MNS and registered the group as Shahar Vikas Aghadi at the Nashik divisional commissionerate, showcasing its preparatory efforts for the election.

The election proceedings for both the mayor and deputy mayor positions will be conducted under the vigilant supervision of District Collector Ayush Prasad, who will serve as the presiding officer.
