Nashik Municipal Corporation Doubles Water Tanker Fleet Amid Early Summer Supply Crisis
Summer has barely begun, yet Nashik is already grappling with intense heat and a severe water supply crisis. In response to mounting complaints from residents and corporators about erratic water availability and extremely low tap pressure, the Nashik Municipal Corporation has taken urgent action by doubling its water tanker fleet.
Immediate Expansion of Tanker Services
The municipal corporation has increased its fleet from 13 to 25 tankers, deploying these additional vehicles across six key divisions. Specifically, twelve new tankers have been allocated to four critical areas: Cidco, Panchavati, Nashik Road, and Nashik East. This expansion comes after repeated reports of poor supply and worsening shortages that have left many households struggling.
Ravindra Dharankar, superintending engineer of the NMC's water supply department, confirmed the move, stating that doubling the tanker count was essential to ensure timely water delivery. "We are sending tankers to areas reporting insufficient water," he explained, emphasizing the department's commitment to addressing the crisis head-on.
Revised Distribution Patterns and Management
Beyond increasing tanker numbers, the water supply department has implemented significant changes to its distribution strategy. Dharankar revealed that distribution patterns have been reworked across all divisions, with revised timing for water supply to improve overall management. "Earlier, some areas received water twice a day. Now, to maintain balance, supply in these pockets has been restricted to once daily," he said.
Staff and valve operators have been instructed to ensure proper distribution, and further expansion is already planned. Dharankar announced that seven more tankers will be deployed next week, bringing the total fleet to 32 vehicles. This proactive approach aims to prevent the situation from deteriorating as summer progresses.
Political Pressure and Official Response
The crisis has drawn significant political attention. During a recent general body meeting, corporators from all parties expressed deep concern over the irregular water supply across the city. In response, Mayor Himgauri Aher directed officials to immediately increase tanker availability and streamline supply. Acting on these instructions, the water supply department swiftly enhanced its fleet.
Currently, the NMC supplies 602 MLD (million litres daily) of water to Nashik. Officials maintain that while dams have sufficient water reserves, poor planning and uneven distribution have led to the irregular supply in several areas. This highlights a need for better infrastructure and management practices to complement the increased tanker deployment.
