Congress Finalizes Candidates for Karnataka By-Elections, Balancing Family Legacies and Community Demands
In a significant political development, the Congress party on Sunday officially announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in Karnataka. The party has selected Samarth Mallikarjun for the Davangere South constituency and Umesh Meti for the Bagalkot seat, both polls scheduled for April 9. This decision comes after intense internal speculation and family conflicts over candidature, highlighting the complex dynamics within the party.
Navigating Family Rifts and Political Traditions
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar emphasized that the party adhered to its long-standing tradition of awarding tickets to family members of deceased legislators. He expressed strong confidence in retaining both seats, which were previously held by Congress leaders Shamanur Shivashankarappa in Davangere South and HY Meti in Bagalkot. The by-elections were necessitated by the passing of these incumbents, creating a vacuum that the party aims to fill with their kin.
In Davangere South, the decision to field Samarth Mallikarjun followed extensive negotiations with the Muslim community, which constitutes approximately 40% of the voting population in the segment. Despite community demands for a ticket, Congress opted to stick with its template of supporting family members of late legislators. Samarth's father, Mallikarjun, is a minister in the Karnataka government, and his mother serves as a Member of Parliament from Davangere, underscoring the family's political clout.
Internal Dynamics and Candidate Selection
Sources reveal that Mallikarjun lobbied aggressively for his son Samarth, citing the legacy of family patriarch Shivashankarappa, who was president of the All India Veershaiva Lingayat Mahasabha. This influential background made it imperative for the party to consider the Shamanur family for the candidature. A senior leader present at a crucial meeting on Saturday night confirmed, "As a result, it was decided to hand the ticket to Samarth." Mallikarjun later stated that the party leadership, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, entrusted this responsibility to his family.
In Bagalkot, the selection of Umesh Meti resolved a potential rebellion within the Meti family. His sister, Mahadevi, had threatened to contest as an independent candidate if Umesh did not receive the ticket. KPCC president DK Shivakumar noted that the party went with popular local opinion in choosing Umesh, despite his elder brother being a front-runner. The Meti family had seen all four children vying for the ticket, reflecting the intense competition and familial pressures involved.
Community Considerations and Political Strategy
Addressing the Muslim community's aspirations in Davangere, DK Shivakumar remarked that he saw nothing wrong with their demand for representation. However, he clarified that Abdul Jabbar, a longtime aspirant, is currently serving his third term as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), implying a tradeoff within the party's broader strategy. Shivakumar plans to visit both constituencies on Monday during the nomination filing process, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remains occupied with budget discussions in the legislature.
The by-elections in Davangere South and Bagalkot are poised to be closely watched, not only for their electoral outcomes but also for how Congress manages internal family rivalries and community expectations. With the party banking on the legacy of late legislators and the political experience of their families, these contests will test the effectiveness of its candidate selection process in maintaining stronghold seats.
