Nagpur's Rs 140 Crore Ambedkar Convention Centre Fully Operational, Statue 75% Complete
The Maharashtra state government informed the legislative assembly on Wednesday that the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Convention Centre in Nagpur, constructed at a substantial cost of Rs 140 crore, is now largely operational with all major facilities actively in use. This announcement came during a session where officials provided detailed updates on the centre's current status and future plans.
Facilities and Operations
Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat elaborated that numerous key facilities within the convention centre are fully functional. These include the auditorium, banquet hall, conference and training halls, dormitory, guest rooms, mini conference hall, and reading room. Minister Shirsat emphasized that there has been no public dissatisfaction reported regarding the centre's operations, indicating smooth functionality since its opening.
Statue Completion Progress
In addition to the operational updates, the government revealed that the 40-foot statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar located on the premises is approximately 75% complete. Officials expect the statue to be fully ready within the next two months, marking a significant milestone for the site dedicated to the iconic leader.
Addressing Concerns and Challenges
During the assembly session, Nagpur North MLA Nitin Raut raised several concerns about non-functional aspects of the centre. His inquiries focused on:
- The proposed bank branch that has not yet been established
- The canteen facility which remains inactive
- Commercial units that are not operational
- The delay in completing the Ambedkar statue
- Whether a dedicated maintenance budget has been allocated
Government Response to Challenges
Minister Shirsat provided comprehensive responses to the concerns raised. Regarding the bank branch, he explained that 17 banks were invited through public notices and direct communication to establish a presence at the centre, but none came forward. The government now plans to reinitiate the allotment process for the bank space, canteen, and commercial units on a rental basis to ensure these facilities become operational.
On the question of maintenance funding, Shirsat clarified that operational costs are currently being met through revenue generated from hall rentals. This is supplemented by government funds that were allocated specifically for the 2023–24 fiscal year. The combined mechanism effectively manages electricity and upkeep expenses, ensuring the centre remains well-maintained without requiring additional dedicated budgetary provisions at this time.
The convention centre represents a significant investment in Nagpur's infrastructure and serves as a tribute to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's legacy. With most facilities already operational and the statue nearing completion, the centre is poised to become a prominent venue for conferences, events, and public gatherings in the region.
