Tragedy Strikes Nagpur Student Filming Social Media Content at Ancient Stepwell

In a heartbreaking incident that highlights the dangers of unsecured heritage sites, an 18-year-old commerce student from Nagpur drowned on Sunday after accidentally falling into a deep, unguarded ancient stepwell while creating content for social media reels.

Victim Identified as Aniket Sontakke

The deceased has been identified as Aniket Sontakke, a resident of Hudkeshwar Road in Nagpur. Aniket was a first-year commerce student at a college located in Sakkardara. According to police reports, he had visited the historic stepwell, locally known as a Bawdi, in Velahari along with four friends specifically to film reels and take photographs for social media platforms.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

The group had chosen the stepwell as their filming location because it was conveniently located just 200-300 meters from Aniket's family's under-construction new house in the area. While posing near the edge of the deep structure, Aniket's slippers accidentally fell into the water. One of his friends' slippers also slipped into the well during the incident.

In what proved to be a fatal decision, Aniket attempted to retrieve the footwear while his friend wisely refrained from taking the risk. In his hasty bid to recover the slippers, Aniket lost his balance and plunged into the deep stepwell, where he tragically drowned despite immediate efforts to save him.

Rescue Efforts and Police Investigation

Aniket's friends immediately raised an alarm upon witnessing the accident. Local residents rushed to the spot and emergency services were alerted. The fire brigade was called to conduct rescue operations at the historic site.

The body was eventually recovered from the deep well and sent to AIIMS Nagpur for post-mortem examination. The Hingna police station has registered a case of accidental death and has ruled out any foul play in the incident, confirming it was a tragic accident rather than anything suspicious.

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This tragic incident raises serious questions about the safety measures at historical sites, particularly ancient stepwells that may lack proper fencing, warning signs, or security personnel. The popularity of social media content creation has led many young people to seek out picturesque but potentially dangerous locations for their videos and photographs.

Authorities may need to reconsider how such heritage structures are maintained and protected, especially when they attract visitors interested in creating digital content. The absence of safety barriers at this particular stepwell proved fatal for a young student pursuing what began as a recreational activity with friends.

The Nagpur community has been shaken by this loss of a promising young life, serving as a sobering reminder of how quickly recreational activities can turn tragic when proper safety precautions are not in place at historical sites.
