MVA Alliance Seals Nashik Civic Poll Pact: Congress, NCP(SP) Get 30-32 Seats
MVA finalises Nashik seat-sharing, ends weeks of deadlock

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in Maharashtra has finally resolved its internal differences, paving the way for a united fight in the crucial Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections. After weeks of intense negotiations and repeated stalemates, the four-party alliance confirmed on Monday that it will contest the January 15 polls together.

Weeks of Uncertainty Culminate in Consensus

The announcement followed a critical joint meeting of the alliance partners held in Nashik city. Leaders from the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the Congress, and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) were present to formalise the agreement. The seat-sharing details were scheduled to be announced late on Monday, bringing an end to a period of significant uncertainty that had threatened the alliance's cohesion.

NCP (SP) leader Sunil Bhusare, who is overseeing his party's preparations for the civic polls, confirmed the development to the media. Representatives from the Shiv Sena (UBT) also affirmed that the MVA would approach the elections as a consolidated front, putting up a joint fight against their rivals.

The Rocky Road to an Agreement

The path to this consensus was far from smooth. For over two weeks, the alliance struggled to find common ground on seat distribution. The initial demands created a major deadlock, with Congress insisting on 40 seats and the NCP (SP) holding out for 30 seats. The disagreements reached a peak on Saturday when talks collapsed, leading to representatives from Congress and NCP (SP) walking out of a meeting with Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS leaders.

In a bid to break the impasse, the two parties presented a revised proposal on Sunday. They scaled down their combined demand and sought 42 seats between them. In a clear signal of their resolve, they also communicated that they were prepared to contest the elections together even without the involvement of Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS, should their proposal be rejected.

Final Breakthrough and Expected Seat Distribution

The renewed discussions on Monday ultimately led to a breakthrough. According to sources familiar with the agreement, Congress and NCP (SP) are likely to contest approximately 30 to 32 seats collectively. The remaining bulk of the electoral battle, around 90 seats, will be fought by candidates from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

The high-stakes meeting saw the presence of key leaders including Congress MP from Dhule, Shobha Bachhav, NCP (SP)'s Sunil Bhusare, Shiv Sena (UBT) deputy leader Datta Gaikwad, the party's Nashik district chief D G Suryavanshi, and MNS city chief Sudam Kombade.

With the deadline for filing nominations set for Tuesday, December 30, candidates from all four alliance parties are now expected to submit their papers on the final day. This last-minute pact ensures the MVA enters the fray for control of the Nashik civic body as a formidable united opposition.
