Mumbai Braces for Major 30-Hour Water Supply Disruption in Eastern Suburbs
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a significant 30-hour water shutdown affecting several parts of Mumbai's eastern suburbs later this week. This planned disruption is part of essential infrastructure works aimed at strengthening the city's water supply network in the M East and M West wards.
Timing and Duration of the Water Cut
The complete water supply cut will be in effect from 2:00 AM on Thursday, February 12, until 8:00 AM on Friday, February 13. During this entire 30-hour period, residents in the specified areas will experience a total suspension of their regular water services.
Affected Areas and Civic Wards
The shutdown will impact multiple neighborhoods across two major municipal wards:
M East Ward (Civic Wards 146, 147, 148):- HPCL and BPCL refinery colonies
- RCF Colony
- Anik, Sahyadri Nagar, and Bharat Nagar
- Old refinery areas
- Several MHADA housing colonies
- Mahul and Chembur Camp
- Vashi Naka and Sindhi Society
- Parts of RC Marg
- Mysore Colony and Laxmi Nagar
Critical Infrastructure Works at Turbhe Reservoir
Civic officials have clarified that this extended shutdown is necessary to execute major engineering works at the Turbhe Low-Level Reservoir. The primary operation involves installing a substantial 1,200mm diameter sluice valve on the inlet pipeline. Additionally, the BMC will connect this inlet pipeline to the tunnel shaft designated as AMT-II.
These technical upgrades are specifically designed to enhance water supply efficiency and improve overall system reliability for the affected eastern suburban regions of Mumbai. The improvements are expected to provide more consistent water pressure and reduce future service interruptions.
Official Advisory for Residents
The BMC has issued a formal advisory urging all affected residents to take necessary precautions:
- Water Storage: Store sufficient water in advance to meet household needs during the 30-hour disruption period.
- Conservation: Use stored water sparingly and avoid wastage throughout the shutdown duration.
- Post-Restoration Safety: Boil and filter drinking water for several days after the regular supply resumes as a precautionary health measure.
Municipal authorities emphasize that while the disruption may cause temporary inconvenience, these infrastructure improvements will deliver long-term benefits through a more robust and reliable water distribution system for Mumbai's eastern suburbs.
