Mangaluru MLA Accuses Congress Government of Creating Artificial Medicine Shortage in Karnataka Hospitals

Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath has launched a scathing critique against the Congress-led state government, alleging a severe and deliberate shortage of essential medicines in government hospitals across Karnataka. The legislator claims this artificial scarcity is endangering the lives of impoverished patients, demonstrating what he describes as the administration's blatant disregard for the underprivileged.

"Playing with Lives": MLA's Harsh Accusations

In a strongly worded statement, Kamath asserted that the Congress government is "playing with the lives of poor patients" by failing to ensure adequate medical supplies. He highlighted that despite numerous complaints from constituents in his district, the health department has shown extreme irresponsibility and indifference. "Many people in our district are calling to report issues, yet the health department, which should respond, remains indifferent," Kamath emphasized.

The MLA pointed out the irony that District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who also serves as the Health Minister, has not addressed these critical shortages. "Despite the fact that our district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao is also the health minister, the people of the district are deprived of health benefits, which is our misfortune," he lamented.

Systemic Failures and Allegations of Corruption

Kamath detailed several systemic failures within the state's healthcare infrastructure:

  • Jan Aushadhi Kendra Closure: The central government's Jan Aushadhi Kendra, which provides affordable medicines to common people, was allegedly shut down for political reasons.
  • Diagnostic Services in Disarray: CT scan and MRI scan services are reported to be non-functional or severely disrupted.
  • Ambulance Service Issues: Emergency ambulance services face operational problems, further compromising patient care.

He also raised serious allegations of vested interests and corruption in the medicine supply chain to government hospitals. According to Kamath, these malpractices have eroded public trust in the Congress administration. "The entire health department is in the ICU, yet the Congress govt is celebrating 1,000 days in office," he criticized.

Impending Protests and Political Repercussions

The healthcare crisis has sparked widespread discontent among medical professionals. Kamath noted that doctors and healthcare staff from all cadres are preparing to stage street protests across the state, demanding the fulfilment of various long-pending demands.

Warning of political consequences, the MLA declared that the public would deliver a "fitting response" to what he termed a "disease-stricken govt" in the upcoming days. His remarks underscore growing tensions between the opposition and the ruling party over healthcare governance in Karnataka.

This controversy highlights critical challenges in the state's public health system, with accusations of negligence and corruption taking center stage in political discourse.
