Woman's Solo Hill Journey in Nainital Ends in Harrowing Assault Attempt
A planned soul-searching retreat in the serene hills of Nainital transformed into a terrifying fight for survival for a 32-year-old woman, who spent an entire night concealed in a forest after her taxi driver attempted to sexually assault her. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Friday, highlights the dangers faced by solo travelers and has prompted swift police action.
Late-Night Journey Takes a Sinister Turn
According to police reports, the woman, an enthusiastic hiker and mountaineer, arrived in Haldwani from Delhi by bus around 11:30 PM on Thursday. With no prior hotel bookings, she intended to secure accommodation upon reaching Nainital. From Haldwani, she hired a taxi operated by Deepak Singh Bora, a 39-year-old local resident. Being her first visit to the area, she activated GPS tracking on her mobile phone to monitor the route.
SSP Manjunath TC of Nainital detailed the sequence of events, stating, "Around 1:30 AM, she noticed the driver had diverted onto an unfamiliar road. Sensing suspicion, she questioned him. Initially, he ignored her, but when she confronted him firmly, he abruptly stopped the car, exited, moved to the rear seat, and allegedly attempted to rape her."
Brave Escape and Overnight Ordeal in the Forest
In a courageous act of self-defense, the woman forcefully kicked the driver in the groin, causing him to lose balance. Seizing the momentary advantage, she leaped from the vehicle and fled barefoot into the nearby forest, sustaining minor injuries during her escape. Bora, who had snatched her mobile phone during the struggle, returned shortly to search the area but failed to locate her in the darkness before fleeing with her belongings.
The woman endured the night hidden behind a large boulder, aware of potential wild animal threats but prioritizing safety from her assailant. She later expressed to counselors that as a nature lover, she felt protected by the environment during her ordeal.
Rescue and Legal Proceedings
Her harrowing experience concluded around 6:30 AM on Friday when a village woman delivering milk spotted her and alerted the village head, who then informed the police. The woman was safely rescued, taken to a hospital for medical examination, and provided with counseling. Her parents arrived from Delhi and accompanied her back home on Saturday.
Police registered a case against Bora under BNS sections for rape, voluntarily causing hurt during robbery, and kidnapping. Using GPS tracking from the vehicle and CCTV footage from Haldwani, authorities arrested Bora, who confessed to the crime during questioning. The woman's mobile phone was recovered, and Bora was produced before a local court before being sent to jail.
This incident underscores critical issues regarding women's safety in remote areas and the importance of vigilance while traveling alone. Authorities have emphasized the need for enhanced security measures and public awareness to prevent such occurrences in the future.
