In a decisive move to protect the agricultural community, Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumara has directed officials to initiate stringent measures against private financiers and microfinance institutions accused of harassing farmers during loan recovery processes. The directive came during a high-level meeting convened at the deputy commissioner's office to address critical demands raised by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, a prominent farmers' organization.
Zero Tolerance for Coercive Practices Against Farmers
Chairing the meeting, DC Kumara made it unequivocally clear that the district administration will not tolerate any form of intimidation or coercive tactics targeting farmers. He emphasized that the government has issued firm instructions explicitly prohibiting private financial institutions from troubling farmers or the general public while recovering loans. Any violation of these directives will result in immediate legal action, he warned, underscoring the administration's commitment to safeguarding vulnerable agricultural households from predatory lending practices.
Strict Adherence to RBI Guidelines Mandatory for Microfinance Companies
Specifically addressing microfinance companies regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Kumara stressed that all recovery procedures must strictly comply with established RBI guidelines. He cautioned that any instance of high-handed behavior or breach of lawful limits by these institutions would invite serious consequences, including potential revocation of licenses and criminal prosecution. This move aims to ensure that financial entities operate within ethical and legal boundaries, respecting the dignity and financial stability of farming families.
Daytime Electricity Supply Crucial for Agricultural Safety and Efficiency
Beyond financial protections, the deputy commissioner also highlighted pressing agricultural infrastructure concerns, particularly the need for reliable electricity during morning hours to facilitate irrigation. He instructed officials from the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) to ensure a consistent power supply and promptly resolve any technical issues that hinder daytime distribution. Providing electricity during daylight enables farmers to work safely, reducing risks from nocturnal hazards such as snakes and insects, which are more prevalent during evening irrigation sessions.

Kumara further called upon all departmental officials to adopt a responsive and empathetic approach when addressing farmers' grievances, ensuring timely resolution of issues affecting agricultural productivity. He urged banking institutions to effectively implement crop loan schemes, which are vital for sustaining farming activities and strengthening rural livelihoods.
