Tragic Drowning Incident in Cachar District

A 26-year-old man tragically drowned in the Larang river located in Cachar district, with his body being recovered on Thursday morning, according to police reports. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the dangers of river bathing even in seemingly shallow waters.

Identity and Circumstances of the Deceased

The deceased has been identified as Kiran Goala, a resident of Charigram under the Katigorah block. According to local residents, Kiran had gone to bathe in the river around 4 pm on Wednesday but failed to return home, prompting immediate concern among his family members.

Balaram Barua, the VDP secretary of the area, provided details on the search efforts. "Family members launched an intensive search late into the night after he went missing. His soap case, gamosa, and slippers were found lying on the riverbank, which raised serious suspicions about his fate," he stated, emphasizing the grim clues left behind.

Search and Recovery Efforts

When Kiran's whereabouts could not be traced despite the initial search, the family lodged a formal missing persons report at the Kalain police station. The authorities and community members collaborated in the efforts, scouring the river area throughout the night.

On Thursday morning, the search culminated in the discovery of Kiran's body floating in the river near his house. Family members expressed shock and claimed that the water level at the spot was shallow, questioning how such a tragedy could occur under these conditions.

Post-Incident Procedures

Following the recovery, the body was promptly sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. This step is part of standard investigative procedures to provide closure and clarity to the grieving family.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with river activities, even in familiar locales. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, especially during monsoon seasons when water currents can be unpredictable.

Community leaders and police are now reviewing safety measures along the Larang river to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The tragedy has sparked discussions on the need for better awareness and infrastructure to safeguard lives in riverine areas of Assam.
