Mamata Banerjee Addresses Packed Community Gathering in Bhowanipore

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee delivered a powerful speech at a community meeting in Bhowanipore's Ladies' Park on Sunday evening, declaring that "election is the festival of democracy and not autocracy." The event drew representatives from various communities including Christian, Muslim, ISKCON, Sindhi, Gujarati, Jain, Sikh, and Bihari backgrounds, with the venue adorned with Trinamool Congress flags.

Venue Atmosphere and Arrival

Attendees began entering the park around 3:30 pm, with the first three rows specifically reserved for community representatives, including several church priests. Banerjee arrived at approximately 6 pm to a completely filled venue, greeting the crowd with folded hands before personally meeting representatives seated in the front rows. She then proceeded to the main gate to acknowledge local residents who had gathered outside.

Informal Address and Allegations

Despite a prepared dais with a chair, Banerjee chose to sit directly in front of the audience with a hand microphone, beginning her speech by apologizing for her delayed arrival as she had come directly from Tarakeswar. In her address, she made several serious allegations:

  • Approximately 300 nuns had their names deleted during the SIR (Summary Revision) process
  • Voters from Muslim, Bihari, and Gujarati communities were removed from electoral rolls without justification
  • Recent raids and naka checking operations were causing severe harassment to ordinary citizens
  • Even the Russian consulate had been troubled during security checks
  • An artist returning from work had faced unnecessary harassment

"Are they running a country? This can't go on for long," Banerjee asserted regarding these incidents.

Political Accusations and Community Appeals

The Chief Minister accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to divide people along caste, creed, and community lines, particularly referencing debates around the women's reservation bill. She specifically questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah remained silent when Indian migrants were allegedly deported from the United States in chains and handcuffs.

Addressing the Gujarati community directly, Banerjee claimed the BJP was trying to "capture Bengal by force" using central forces, financial resources, and muscle power due to political fear. She emphasized that 32 lakh deleted voters had already been restored to electoral rolls, with remaining names to be included soon.

Message of Unity and Support

Banerjee assured the gathering that all religious and cultural communities could practice their faith freely in Bengal, noting her personal attendance at numerous community functions to strengthen social harmony. Following her speech, representatives from Christian, Muslim, Sindhi, and Jain communities expressed strong support for the Chief Minister.

Reverend Martine, representing the Christian community, stated: "We are with you, Didi, and we will all pray for your victory this time too." The hour-long meeting concluded at 7 pm with enthusiastic chants of "Joy Bangla" from the assembled crowd.

Throughout her address, Banerjee urged community representatives to remain united and carry her message back to their respective communities, reinforcing her vision of inclusive governance and democratic principles.
