Madurai witnessed a surge of excitement as numerous first-time voters turned out in large numbers to cast their ballots in the assembly election on Thursday. Despite the bustling crowds at polling centers, these new voters navigated the electoral process with determination to support their preferred candidates.
Young Voters Express Hope for Change
P Aashika, a resident of Sammatipuram and a first-time voter, shared her optimism: 'We have seen the problems the city and the state faced over many years, and we are hopeful that our votes will be instrumental in affecting a change for the better and improve all our lives.' Explaining her decision-making process, she said, 'In the past few weeks, there have been many advertisements on social media regarding party promises, candidate information, and more. We see advertisements from every party, as well as look at the issues around us and what they are saying regarding solutions. Based on this, we make educated votes.' She added that while her parents advised her on which party to vote for, she had already resolved to vote based on her own judgment.
M Samkumar, a 22-year-old from Tallakulam, echoed similar sentiments. 'I cast my vote without anyone's influence; even my parents insisted I vote for a particular party, but I voted for the candidate who intends to bring about change,' he stated. W Arshu Safora from Iyer Bungalow also expressed her enthusiasm: 'I am feeling good and excited to vote for the first time. I selected a candidate who promised to improve better infrastructure for my constituency.'
Transgender Voters Participate for the First Time
In the Madurai South constituency, at Sourashtra Higher Secondary School, many transgender voters also exercised their franchise for the first time. Maya, one of the voters, emphasized the importance of voting: 'Voting is an important democratic right for all of us, and it is important that we exercise it.' She added that the transgender community demands equal treatment and support for basic infrastructure needs from the party that comes to power next.
Selfie Stations Popular Among Youth
The selfie stations placed at polling centers proved highly popular among youth and first-time voters, who proudly displayed their inked fingers and captured the moment. The enthusiasm among new voters reflected a strong desire for change and active participation in the democratic process.
