Ludhiana Garbage Collectors Stage Protest Over Malfunctioning Waste Compactors
Garbage collectors in Ludhiana once again voiced their frustration this Saturday by protesting the poor solid waste management system at the static compactor site located on 100 ft Road in Sherpur. The demonstration highlighted ongoing issues with the city's waste disposal infrastructure, which have persisted despite previous complaints and similar actions.
Non-Functional Machinery Forces Open Dumping
The core of the protest centered on the malfunctioning equipment at the compactor site. According to the collectors, one machine has been out of service for several days, while the second compactor was completely full on Saturday, leaving no capacity for additional waste. This situation forced workers to dump collected trash directly onto the floor of the site, undermining the very purpose of the compactors, which were installed to eliminate open dumping practices.
Workers reported that their daily routine begins as early as 6 am, involving collection from numerous households across the area. However, upon arrival at the compactor sites, they are frequently instructed to wait due to operational failures. The machines often experience technical malfunctions, and the vehicles tasked with transporting waste to the Jamalpur dump site do not return in a timely manner, exacerbating delays.
Union-Led Demonstration and Unaddressed Grievances
The protest was organized by members of the New Valmiki Ekta Sangharsh Committee, a union that has been actively advocating for better working conditions. This group recently staged a demonstration at Pratap Chowk after being prohibited from dumping garbage from residential areas, a move that coincided with a drivers' strike that resulted in the site being locked.
Union representatives have repeatedly contacted authorities to highlight these systemic issues, but no substantial improvements have been implemented. The lack of response has fueled growing discontent among the workers, leading to protests that are now occurring in various parts of the city.
Demands for Improved Infrastructure and Working Conditions
In response to the ongoing challenges, the garbage collectors are now demanding the installation of additional compactors at more sites to ensure efficient waste collection and lifting. Surinder Kumar, a prominent union member, emphasized the hardships faced by the workers, many of whom start their shifts on empty stomachs early in the morning.
Kumar pointed out that the prolonged waits at compactor sites are particularly grueling, affecting not only male workers but also an increasing number of female garbage collectors who visit these locations and endure similar difficulties. He stressed that without functional machinery, collectors have no alternative but to resort to open dumping at the compactor sites, which defeats the objective of the waste management system.
The situation underscores a broader failure in Ludhiana's solid waste management strategy, where infrastructure shortcomings continue to disrupt daily operations and impact the livelihoods of those responsible for keeping the city clean.
