Major Fire Ravages Lucknow's Barabirwa Vegetable Market, Causing Extensive Damage
A severe and destructive fire erupted late on Thursday night at the bustling Barabirwa vegetable market located in the Krishna Nagar area of Lucknow. The conflagration rapidly spread through the densely packed commercial zone, engulfing more than 100 shops and completely reducing over 20 of them to ashes. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 PM near a local mall, triggered widespread panic among residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity.
Intense Flames and Explosions Rock the Locality
Eyewitness accounts described the fire as exceptionally fierce, with towering flames visible from a distance of nearly three kilometers. Thick, acrid smoke blanketed the entire locality, creating hazardous conditions. The situation was further exacerbated by a series of loud explosions, estimated to be between 10 and 12 in number, which are suspected to have been caused by blasts from LPG cylinders stored within the market premises.
The market, which spans approximately 50,000 square feet, is home to hundreds of shops dealing in fruits, vegetables, grains, and various other goods. Officials noted that the presence of a large quantity of highly combustible materials, including plastic sacks and cardboard packaging, significantly accelerated the fire's rapid spread and intensity.
Firefighting Efforts and Official Response
Fire brigade teams from multiple stations, including Krishna Nagar, Alambagh, and PGI, were swiftly mobilized to the scene. Approximately ten fire tenders were deployed in a concerted effort to combat the blaze. After several hours of relentless firefighting, the flames were finally brought under control, though cooling operations continued thereafter.
Chief Fire Officer of Lucknow, Ankush Mittal, provided preliminary insights, suggesting that the fire may have originated from a short circuit in one of the shops. "Around 200 shops are located in the market, and 15 to 20 shops have been completely gutted. The fire has now been brought under control, and cooling operations are underway," he stated.
Allegations of Delayed Response and Rescue Operations
Some shopkeepers raised concerns, alleging that fire tenders arrived nearly an hour after the incident was first reported, which they claim allowed the fire to intensify unchecked. However, officials countered these allegations, emphasizing that fire teams responded promptly and worked continuously to contain the devastating blaze.
Police personnel cordoned off the affected area to ensure public safety and facilitated evacuation procedures to prevent any casualties. Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported thus far, although property damage is estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees. Further investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause and full extent of the fire.
Community Impact and Ongoing Assessment
The fire has caused significant disruption to the local community and economy, with many shopkeepers facing substantial financial losses. The market, a vital hub for fresh produce and goods, will require considerable time and resources to recover from this calamity. Authorities are assessing the damage and coordinating relief efforts to support those affected by this tragic incident.
