Lucknow Fire Kills Two Sisters, Destroys 280 Shanties

Tragic Loss of Two Sisters in Devastating Lucknow Slum Fire

LUCKNOW: In a heartbreaking development, the bodies of two minor sisters were recovered during an intensive early morning search operation on Thursday. This tragic discovery came hours after a catastrophic fire completely razed more than 280 makeshift shanties in Sector 11 of Vikas Nagar on Wednesday evening.

Victims Identified as Young Sisters

The deceased have been identified as two-year-old Shruti and her two-month-old sister, both daughters of Satish, a resident of Kashipurwa village in Barabanki district. According to police authorities, the charred remains were discovered buried in the debris when search teams resumed their operations at daybreak on Thursday, following the containment of the blaze late Wednesday night.

Station House Officer of Vikas Nagar, Alok Kumar Singh, confirmed the recovery, stating that police and fire personnel conducted a meticulous combing operation through the gutted settlement in the early morning hours to locate any missing individuals. It was during this thorough search that the remains of the two young girls were found, indicating they were likely trapped inside their shanty and unable to escape the rapidly advancing flames.

Rapidly Spreading Inferno

The devastating fire initially broke out around 5:30 pm on Wednesday and quickly engulfed the densely packed cluster of temporary huts. The settlement was largely inhabited by migrant labourers from nearby districts and various states across India. Within mere minutes, the blaze transformed into a massive inferno, leaving residents with minimal time to salvage belongings or ensure everyone had safely evacuated.

Firefighting efforts faced severe complications due to a series of loud explosions caused by more than 50 LPG cylinders stored inside the shanties. These powerful blasts significantly intensified the flames and created widespread panic, forcing both residents and emergency responders to maintain distance at critical intervals, thereby delaying containment operations.

From Initial Relief to Tragic Discovery

Initially, authorities had reported no casualties as most residents managed to flee the rapidly spreading fire. However, concerns mounted overnight as several families reported missing members, prompting police to launch a fresh, comprehensive search operation at dawn on Thursday.

Police have now conducted inquest proceedings and sent the bodies for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Officials confirmed that a detailed investigation is currently underway to reconstruct the precise sequence of events and examine any possible lapses in safety or response protocols.

Illegal Settlement and Relief Measures

District administration officials revealed that the settlement had been established illegally on land belonging to the Awas Vikas Parishad. In the aftermath of this tragedy, district administration has initiated comprehensive relief and rehabilitation measures, including:

  • Temporary shelter arrangements for displaced families
  • Organized food distribution to affected residents
  • Systematic assessment of losses suffered by impacted families
  • Coordination with various agencies for long-term rehabilitation

The devastating fire has highlighted critical issues regarding informal settlements, fire safety protocols in densely populated areas, and the living conditions of migrant labour communities in urban centers. As investigations continue, authorities are working to provide immediate support to the hundreds of families who have lost their homes and belongings in this tragic incident.
