Lamborghini Crash in Kanpur Leaves Six Injured, Tobacco Baron's Son Booked
A high-speed luxury car accident on a busy Kanpur road has left at least six people injured, with police booking the son of a prominent local tobacco baron. The incident, which occurred on the upscale VIP Road in Gwaltoli, has sparked public outrage and raised questions about influence and accountability.
Horrific Scene on VIP Road
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying sequence of events as a Lamborghini allegedly driven by Shivam Mishra, son of businessman KK Mishra, tore through the busy stretch near Rev-3 Mall around 3:15 pm on Sunday. According to multiple accounts, the luxury sports car first collided with an autorickshaw before crashing into a stationary motorcycle.
The impact was so severe that the motorcycle rider was flung approximately 10 feet into the air, while the Lamborghini mounted the motorcycle's front wheel and dragged it for some distance. The vehicle finally came to a halt after hitting an electric pole, leaving a trail of destruction and panic in its wake.
Police Action and Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava confirmed that the accident occurred when the luxury car "went out of control and ploughed into people standing along the roadside and several vehicles." Police initially filed an FIR against an "unidentified person" before finally booking Shivam Mishra for his alleged involvement.
When questioned about whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, Srivastava stated that this would be determined once the investigation has been completed. The probe is currently ongoing, with authorities examining all aspects of the crash.
Political Response and Public Outrage
BJP's Kanpur MP, Ramesh Awasthi, addressed the incident, asserting that police are taking appropriate action. "We are not protecting anyone. The accused has been named, and he will be sent to jail," Awasthi told news agency ANI, emphasizing that strict measures would be taken against the accused regardless of his family background.
Angry locals gathered at the accident site immediately after the crash, surrounding the damaged Lamborghini and preventing the driver from leaving. Witnesses reported that private bouncers accompanying the accused attempted to push back the crowd and behaved aggressively, escalating tensions at the scene.
Victims' Accounts and Allegations
Among the injured was Taufiq, a resident of Yamunaganj, who was thrown several meters and suffered serious leg injuries. The remaining victims sustained fractures and bruises, according to police reports.
At the police station, victims and local residents alleged misbehavior by associates of the accused and claimed that police were going soft on him due to his family's influence. Some even suggested that pressure was being exerted for a compromise settlement.
Sonu Tripathi, one of the injured, recounted to mediapersons how he and his cousin were standing near their motorcycle when the car struck them. "My cousin fell and two other persons were flung onto the footpath," Tripathi said, confirming that they had filed a formal complaint.
The Mishra Family Background
KK Mishra, the father of the accused, is the owner of Banshidhar Exports Pvt. Ltd., a company that supplies tobacco to gutkha manufacturers in the region. The family has long been known for their substantial wealth and flamboyant lifestyle.
Shivam Mishra himself is widely recognized in elite social circles for his passion for exotic automobiles. The family's collection over the years has included some of the world's most expensive marques—Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari and McLaren—often spotted at their residences in Delhi and Kanpur.
Sources familiar with earlier investigations revealed that luxury cars worth over Rs 100 crore were once found parked at properties linked to the family, highlighting the scale of their wealth. Beyond automobiles, Shivam Mishra has also made headlines for hosting extravagant parties and social events.
Ongoing Scrutiny and Aftermath
Police rushed to the accident spot, rescued the driver, and shifted him along with the injured to a private hospital. The damaged Lamborghini was seized and taken to the police station as evidence.
While authorities continue to probe the circumstances of the accident, the incident has revived scrutiny of the Mishra family's lifestyle, marked by ultra-luxury possessions and past Income Tax investigations. The case has become a focal point for discussions about privilege, road safety, and equal application of the law.
