Kotgal Village in Gadchiroli District Implements Comprehensive Liquor Ban

Inspired by the recent stringent anti-liquor measures adopted in Bamanpalli, a hamlet in Gadchiroli, another village in the district, Kotgal, has declared a complete ban on liquor. This prohibition will be backed by stringent penalties and decisive action against violators, marking a significant community-led initiative to address alcohol-related issues.

Following the Bamanpalli Model

In Bamanpalli, villagers had decided to impose fines for liquor trading, with the penalty corpus being utilized for development work. Building on this precedent, Kotgal in Gadchiroli taluka has taken a more comprehensive approach. The Gram Sabha recently passed a resolution with the ambitious aim of transforming Kotgal into a model, liquor-free village.

Stringent Penalties and Rewards System

As per the resolution, anyone found selling or distributing liquor in Kotgal will face severe consequences. The penalties include:

  • Financial fines imposed on offenders.
  • Cancellation of ration cards for violators.
  • Disqualification from all government welfare schemes.
  • Criminal cases registered against offenders through the dispute resolution committee and the police patil.

Additionally, to encourage community participation in enforcement, the village has introduced a rewards system. Anyone who provides credible information about illegal liquor sellers or brewers will be given a cash reward of Rs 3,000. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential to ensure their safety and encourage reporting.

Women-Led Initiative Against Alcoholism

Notably, women from Kotgal village took the lead in this anti-liquor initiative, highlighting the severe impact of alcohol on families. During the Gram Sabha meeting, women emphasized that alcohol addiction among men has led to frequent domestic disputes and abuse. They pointed out that alcoholism has adversely affected men's health, further straining family incomes and overall well-being.

Kotgal, with a population of approximately 3,300 spread across 820 households, has been grappling with the serious consequences of alcohol consumption. The community's proactive stance is now being discussed across the district as a prime example of grassroots action against liquor.
