Kosi River's Remarkable Transformation Under NDA Governance
In a significant development for Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced on Tuesday that the Kosi river, historically viewed as a curse for the state, has now emerged as a boon due to enhanced river management strategies implemented by the NDA government. This transformation marks a pivotal shift in how the river is perceived and utilized for regional development.
From Flood Menace to Agricultural Asset
Addressing a gathering during the Samriddhi Yatra alongside Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Madhubani, Samrat Choudhary reflected on the river's turbulent past. He recalled the devastating floods of 2007–08, which severely impacted most districts in the Kosi region after Nepal released a staggering 1,92,000 cusecs of water. "The NDA government, under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar, implemented a meticulously planned strategy to control the Kosi and harness it as a catalyst for development," he stated.
Today, the river irrigates approximately four lakh acres of agricultural land, providing a lifeline to farmers and boosting food security. Key initiatives such as the Kosi-Mechi link project have been launched, alongside efforts to raise dams and ensure their regular maintenance, reinforcing the river's positive impact.
Evidence of Effective Water Management
Highlighting the stark contrast between past and present, Samrat Choudhary noted that in 2024, despite Nepal releasing about 6,48,000 cusecs of water—more than triple the 2007–08 volume—the impact was confined to only 150 villages. "This dramatic reduction in flood damage is a testament to good governance and superior water management practices," he emphasized. The deputy CM added that the river, once synonymous with disaster, has now gained national recognition, with a building in the MPs' residential complex in Delhi named after the Kosi.
Broader Development Initiatives
Beyond river management, Samrat Choudhary reiterated the government's commitment to law and order, affirming that ongoing actions against criminals aim to cleanse society of such elements. On infrastructure, he revealed that the interstate bus stand under construction in Madhubani will meet international standards, offering direct connectivity to neighboring states and Nepal.
Praising Nitish Kumar's leadership, he outlined how the NDA government has established a strong foundation in critical sectors:
- Health and Education: Enhanced access and quality.
- Roads and Electricity: Improved connectivity and power supply.
- Water Supply: Ensured reliable resources for communities.
The focus has now shifted to employment and industrial growth, with initiatives like the semiconductor policy, industrial corridors, defence corridors, and IT sector development designed to create job opportunities for Bihar's youth within the state.
Economic and Women Empowerment Goals
Assuring long-term economic prosperity, Samrat Choudhary pledged that over the next five years, the government will build a robust network of industries in Bihar, generating large-scale employment. He also highlighted women-centric programs such as the Mukhymantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana and Jeevika, which have empowered self-help groups and transformed women's lives.
"The government has provided Rs 10,000 each to 1.56 crore women, and based on their performance, they will now receive assistance of up to Rs 2 lakh to expand businesses and employment opportunities," he explained, underscoring the commitment to inclusive growth.
