Kolkata's Nagerbazar Flyover Beautified for Poila Baisakh

Kolkata's Nagerbazar Flyover Undergoes Major Beautification Ahead of Poila Baisakh

The section beneath the Nagerbazar flyover, officially known as Ramkrishna Paramahansa Setu, has been transformed into a vibrant cultural zone as part of a beautification drive ahead of the Bengali New Year, Poila Baisakh. This initiative aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal and pedestrian experience in the area.

Colorful Transformation of Flyover Pillars

Most of the 35 pillars supporting the flyover have been freshly painted in vibrant colors and adorned with traditional alpanas and other artistic designs. The pillars now feature colorful paintings that include drawings inspired by terracotta art, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kolkata. This artistic makeover gives the previously plain infrastructure a lively and aesthetic look.

Renovation of Median Stretch on Jessore Road

In addition to the pillar paintings, the median stretch below the flyover on Jessore Road, located within the South Dum Dum municipality area, has been completely renovated. Previously, this area was often occupied by street vendors and described as messy. It has now been cleared and revitalized with:

  • A green verge featuring new plants and increased greenery
  • Street furniture including murals and other decorative elements
  • Enhanced pedestrian-friendly spaces

The renovation brings a fresh, clean, and green appearance to the stretch, significantly improving the urban landscape.

Official Statements and Funding Details

A government official explained that this beautification project was undertaken to create a more pleasant and pedestrian-friendly space that reflects Kolkata's cultural heritage. The initiative was funded through local MLA Aditi Munshi's Local Area Development (LAD) scheme, with approximately Rs 29 lakh spent on the comprehensive beautification work.

"The area beneath the Nagerbazar flyover has been beautified, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the city, to create a more pleasant and pedestrian-friendly space utilising funds from local MLA Aditi Munshi's local area development scheme," the official stated.

Positive Response from Local Residents

Local residents have welcomed the transformation. Sharmistha Ganguly, a resident of the area, expressed her satisfaction with the changes.

"The stretch below the flyover is now looking great and has a fresh, clean and green look. It is good that the beautification has been done," Ganguly commented, highlighting the community's appreciation for the improved urban environment.

Broader Context of Urban Beautification Initiatives

This project follows similar urban renewal efforts recently implemented in other parts of Kolkata. Notably, a 100-meter stretch below the Baguiati flyover on VIP Road, which was previously used as a garbage dump yard, has been converted into a vibrant community hangout zone. That transformation included:

  1. A football and cricket arena for sports enthusiasts
  2. Designated zones for zumba and skating activities
  3. A dedicated pet park for animal lovers

These initiatives demonstrate a growing trend in Kolkata toward repurposing underutilized urban spaces into functional, attractive community areas that enhance residents' quality of life and celebrate local culture.
