From Displacement to Aerospace Pioneer: Hemant Bhave's Remarkable Mihan SEZ Journey
In a story of resilience and reinvention, Hemant Bhave, whose land was acquired by the Maharashtra government 25 years ago for what would become the Mihan Special Economic Zone (SEZ), has made a triumphant return as a key aerospace manufacturer within the very same project.
A Painful Uprooting and a New Beginning
Back in the late 1990s, the state government acquired Bhave's property at Khapri, Nagpur, where he operated a small engineering unit called Bhagyashree Home Appliances. Having started the venture in his late twenties during the 1980s, Bhave was just finding his footing when the compulsory acquisition forced him to relocate his entire business.
"I was in complete shock. The compensation offered was minimal and utterly inadequate to cover our substantial losses," Bhave recalls, emphasizing that the more generous land acquisition laws providing higher compensation were not yet enacted at that time. "We received a pittance, but had no alternative except to vacate the premises."
Following this displacement, Bhave secured a new plot at the MIDC Hingna industrial estate, where he continued his operations, gradually moving away from solely home appliance manufacturing to undertake various metal engineering contracts.
The Aerospace Turnaround and Mihan SEZ Re-entry
The company's trajectory shifted dramatically after 2012 when Bhave's son, Prasad, returned with a degree in aerospace engineering. This expertise prompted a strategic pivot towards the aviation sector.
"We deliberately explored opportunities in aerospace and steadily built our capabilities. Today, we rank among the top twenty vendors for several major corporations, and our contributions to ISRO have been formally recognized," explains Prasad Bhave.
This strategic shift has now culminated in a full-circle moment. Bhagyashree Home Appliances is acquiring 2.5 acres within the Mihan SEZ—one of India's largest multiproduct special economic zones—to establish a plant dedicated to manufacturing precision aircraft components.
Prestigious Clientele and National Contributions
The new facility will primarily serve two anchor tenants within the SEZ:
- Dassault Reliance Aviation Limited (DRAL): This joint venture produces spares for Rafale fighter jets and will manufacture the Falcon business jet, marking India's first-ever commercial aircraft production line at Mihan.
- Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL): A key supplier to global aviation giants Boeing and Airbus.
Beyond the SEZ, the company has already established itself as a valued vendor:
- Supplying sheet metal parts for Su-30 fighter jets to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
- Providing critical components for ISRO's landmark Chandrayaan lunar mission.
- Serving as a key vendor for Godrej Aviation, supplying parts for the Kaveri indigenous engines developed for the Tejas aircraft.
A Name That Tells a Story
Despite its advanced aerospace work, the company retains its original name, Bhagyashree Home Appliances. This is a nod to its humble beginnings, when Bhave invented a device to measure cooking gas levels in cylinders, helping consumers plan refills in advance.
"It has been an exceptionally long and challenging journey," reflects Hemant Bhave. "Being uprooted was devastating, but we persevered. Now, to be back here at Mihan, contributing to India's aerospace ambitions, is profoundly rewarding." The decision to base their new plant in the SEZ was driven by proximity to their major clients, DRAL and TASL, for whom they will manufacture a wide array of components based on supplied designs.
This narrative underscores a significant transformation—from a project-affected person facing displacement to a pioneering entrepreneur fueling India's growing aviation and defense manufacturing ecosystem from within the very zone that once claimed his land.
