Kolkata's Voter Roll Cuts Spark Tight Assembly Election Battle
A significant reduction in voter rolls across Salt Lake, New Town, Rajarhat-Gopalpur, and adjoining areas under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has dramatically reshaped the electoral landscape. This development sets the stage for an unusually tight contest in this year's assembly election, compelling all major political parties to recalibrate their strategies and campaign approaches.
Substantial Deletions Across Key Constituencies
The implementation of the Systematic Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR) has led to the deletion of over one-fifth of voters in three critical constituencies: Bidhannagar, Rajarhat-New Town, and Rajarhat-Gopalpur. In Bidhannagar, which encompasses Salt Lake and parts of New Town, the electorate has shrunk by a substantial 22.4%. The number of voters has plummeted from 2.56 lakh to 1.98 lakh, marking a significant demographic shift.
Rajarhat-New Town has experienced a similar trend, with nearly 68,928 voters—or 21.5%—removed from the electoral roll. This reduction brings the total voter count down from 3.2 lakh to 2.51 lakh, altering the constituency's political dynamics. Rajarhat-Gopalpur, comprising rural pockets such as Gopalpur and Arjunpur along with urban areas like Teghoria and Baguiati, has also recorded a 20.4% drop. A total of 54,395 names have been struck off, further intensifying the electoral competition.
Impact on Victory Margins and Political Fortunes
These large-scale deletions assume immense significance in seats where victory margins have fluctuated sharply in recent polls. In Rajarhat-New Town, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured victories by approximately 9,000 votes in both 2011 and 2016, before achieving a landslide margin of over 56,000 votes in 2021. However, the party trailed in this constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha poll, indicating a shifting political tide.
The SIR process has coincided with notable changes on the ground. Residents of large slum clusters, such as Ghuni bustee—which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged housed illegal Bangladeshi immigrants—have vacated the area. Piyush Kanodia, the BJP candidate from Rajarhat-New Town, stated, "The rolls have been cleaned up and fake voters removed." This assertion underscores the party's stance on electoral integrity.
Allegations and Political Responses
In contrast, the Trinamool Congress has alleged that genuine voters have been unjustly struck off the rolls. Tapas Chatterjee, a TMC MLA, expressed confidence despite what he termed as "unjust" deletions. He emphasized the party's resilience and commitment to addressing voter concerns.
In Bidhannagar, minister Sujit Bose faces a tougher fight following the voter roll reductions. After winning by over 36,000 votes in 2011, his margins dropped to around 7,000-8,000 in the last two polls. Bose added, "Voters from one particular community and those from poorer sections have been targeted. Voters will respond to this on poll day." His statement highlights allegations of selective targeting and the potential for voter backlash.
Rajarhat-Gopalpur has witnessed shifting political fortunes over the years. While TMC's Purnendu Bose secured a narrow victory in 2016, Aditi Munshi achieved a comfortable win in 2021. Munshi stated, "I am confident of retaining the seat," reflecting optimism amidst the altered electoral landscape.
Strategic Recalibrations and Future Implications
The substantial voter roll deletions have forced all major parties to reassess their campaign strategies. Key areas of focus include:
- Voter Mobilization: Parties are intensifying efforts to mobilize remaining voters and address concerns of those allegedly removed.
- Constituency Analysis: Detailed analysis of demographic shifts to tailor messages and outreach programs.
- Legal Challenges: Potential legal avenues to contest deletions and ensure fair representation.
This electoral recalibration underscores the heightened competition and uncertainty in Kolkata's political arena. As parties navigate these changes, the upcoming assembly election promises to be a closely watched and fiercely contested battle, with outcomes potentially hinging on voter turnout and strategic adaptations.
