In a strategic blend of festive outreach and political campaigning, candidates across party lines in Kolkata and its surrounding areas reached out to residents on Saturday. The effort combined warm Eid greetings with a significant pre-poll push ahead of the crucial April assembly elections. Despite persistent rainfall from the early morning hours, politicians diligently visited mosques and neighborhoods, connecting with voters through the traditional exchange of sweets and flowers.
Trinamool Congress Candidates Engage Voters Across Constituencies
From greeting worshippers offering prayers in mosques to visiting densely populated residential areas, Trinamool Congress candidates demonstrated a strong grassroots presence. In North Kolkata, Shashi Panja, the Trinamool candidate from Shyampukur, made a notable visit to the historic Baghbazar Mosque to meet with local families and community leaders.
Meanwhile, at the prominent Alambazar Jama Masjid, Trinamool's Baranagar candidate Sayantika Banerjee engaged with devotees and residents. "People were exceptionally warm and welcoming, with many families inviting me into their homes," Banerjee remarked. "In our beloved state of West Bengal, we proudly celebrate all festivals together, irrespective of caste, creed, or religious background."
CPM Leaders Emphasize Unity and Peace During Festive Outreach
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also fielded several candidates who participated actively in the festive-political outreach. Afrin Begum, the CPM candidate for Ballygunge, visited multiple community pockets to share Eid greetings and connect with constituents. "I have grown up in this area, and today is fundamentally about sharing joy and happiness with everyone," Begum stated. "It also serves as an important reminder to reject divisive politics and actively promote peace, harmony, and communal unity."
Additional CPM leaders, including Jadavpur nominee Bikashranjan Bhattacharyya and Baranagar candidate Sayandeep Mitra, dedicated their day to visiting mosques and wishing residents across their respective constituencies, reinforcing their commitment to inclusive politics.
Persistent Rain Fails to Dampen Campaign Enthusiasm
Despite a steady downpour throughout the day, campaign activities continued unabated. Vijay Upadhyay, the Trinamool candidate for Jorasanko, conducted an extensive tour of key areas including Zakaria Street, Madan Mohan Burman Street, and Rajabazar. "We function as one large, interconnected family here in Kolkata," Upadhyay emphasized. "The residents know that Vijay Upadhyay will always be present and ready to serve their needs and address their concerns."
