Kochi Implements Strict Green Protocol for Assembly Elections with Plastic Ban

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Kochi district administration has decided to enforce a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic and disposable items at all election-related facilities. The decision was made during a crucial meeting convened by District Collector G Priyanka on Wednesday, marking a proactive step to conduct the upcoming assembly elections in accordance with green protocol guidelines.

Complete Prohibition at Election Centres

The ban will be strictly implemented across polling stations, voter facilitation centres, training centres, and distribution-receiving centres. Instead of conventional plastic cups, plates, and banners, only reusable eco-friendly materials will be permitted. This initiative aims to minimize environmental harm during the election process, reflecting a growing commitment to ecological responsibility in public administration.

Waste Management and Segregation Systems

To ensure effective waste management, special bins will be installed at all centres to segregate organic and inorganic waste. The collected inorganic waste will be gathered in bags provided by the Clean Kerala Company and subsequently transferred to designated material collection facilities. Green task force members will be deployed to monitor these centres and prevent any accumulation of waste, maintaining cleanliness and environmental standards.

Enforcement and Compliance Measures

Local bodies have received strict instructions to immediately remove plastic arches, banners, and boards installed in public places that violate the green protocol. The cost of removal will be recovered from the concerned political parties or individuals, ensuring accountability. Nodal officers have been appointed at each centre to oversee compliance with the green protocol, and daily records of waste amounts must be maintained.

Recommendations will be made for disciplinary action against any officials found violating these rules, underscoring the seriousness of the initiative. The meeting, which included tahsildars, returning officers, and green protocol nodal officers, emphasized the essential need to conduct elections without harming the environment.

Innovative Recycling Initiative

In a creative twist, reusable paper and plastic waste collected from election centres will be handed over to the Clean Kerala Company to create an ‘Election Souvenir’. This not only promotes recycling but also serves as a symbolic reminder of the district's commitment to sustainable practices during electoral processes.

This comprehensive approach by the Kochi district administration sets a precedent for eco-friendly elections, balancing democratic processes with environmental stewardship. The move is expected to reduce plastic pollution significantly and inspire similar initiatives in other regions, contributing to broader efforts under the green protocol framework.
