Kerala Lifeguards Receive Delayed March Wages After Financial Uncertainty
In a significant development, nearly 180 lifeguards across the state of Kerala have finally received their wages for the month of March, ending weeks of financial uncertainty and distress. The payment was processed on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief to these essential frontline workers who had been struggling without their salaries.
Ernakulam Lifeguards Face Particular Hardship
The delay in salary disbursement was especially challenging for lifeguards in Ernakulam district, where 26 personnel are deployed. Among them, eight lifeguards stationed at Fort Kochi beach faced mounting financial pressures as the delay coincided with a period of high personal expenditure and increased workload.
Lifeguards in Kerala earn a daily wage of Rs 730, and the non-payment of their March salary left many struggling to meet basic household expenses. "We had anticipated early payment due to festive occasions like Easter and Vishu, but instead we were left struggling for nearly a month," one lifeguard revealed. The situation was exacerbated by rising costs of essential goods and a complete lack of support for job-related expenses.
Decade Without Pay Hike and Out-of-Pocket Expenses
Despite the high-risk nature of their work, these lifeguards have not received a pay increase in nearly ten years. Compounding their financial difficulties, they are currently forced to pay approximately Rs 6,000 from their own pockets for uniforms and related accessories required for their duties.
The importance of these lifeguards to public safety cannot be overstated. Since their initial deployment in 2012, beach casualties have dramatically decreased from an average of 15 incidents per year to just one or two annually, highlighting their critical role in coastal safety.
Tourism Department Responds to Crisis
The Kerala tourism department attributed the salary delay to a temporary fund shortage but confirmed that the crisis has now been resolved. "An allocation of Rs 6.30 crore has been set aside to cover wages for the current financial year. The salaries will be disbursed promptly starting next month," a senior tourism official stated.
The department's response came after media attention highlighted the plight of these frontline workers, prompting assurances that such payment delays would not recur in the future.
Unresolved Amenity Issues Remain
While the immediate wage crisis has been addressed, several basic amenity issues continue to plague lifeguards across Kerala. At Fort Kochi beach specifically, the toilet facility remains unopened despite being constructed, creating additional challenges for personnel during their long shifts.
The resolution of the salary delay represents a crucial step forward, but lifeguards and their advocates emphasize that comprehensive support including proper facilities, equipment provisions, and fair compensation remains essential for these vital public safety workers.
