Kerala Election Row: LDF Accused of Communal Campaign

Communal Campaign Allegations Rock Kerala's Perambra Constituency

A significant political controversy has erupted in Kozhikode's Perambra constituency, casting a shadow over the ongoing election campaigning. The dispute centers on allegations that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) made inflammatory announcements from a campaign vehicle targeting United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Fathima Thahiliya.

The Viral Video That Sparked the Controversy

The issue came to public attention after a video recorded by Avala native Salil at Madathil Mukku went viral across social media platforms. In the controversial recording, an announcement allegedly made from an LDF campaign vehicle claims that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is conducting a covert campaign to secure votes for Thahiliya with the slogan 'Our votes for Kauminte Kutti.'

The announcement specifically states: "IUML is conducting a covert campaign seeking votes for a child of its community. They are calling for religious consolidation. This is IUML resorting to a communal polarization strategy in Perambra. People with a sense of equality must defeat IUML's religious polarization. To show that Perambra stands for humanity, cast your votes for the Left."

Official Complaints and Political Reactions

In response to the viral video, UDF election committee chairman K Balanarayanan filed a formal complaint with the state election commission. Simultaneously, Kerala Students Union (KSU) general secretary Arjun Kattayattu lodged a separate complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP).

"LDF has gone to the extent of making a communal campaign by referring to UDF's candidate as a Muslim girl," Balanarayanan stated emphatically, highlighting what the UDF perceives as deliberate religious targeting.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K C Venugopal escalated the criticism, asserting that "CPM's alleged communal campaign insults secular Kerala. Fearing defeat, CPM resorted to a campaign that would put even extremist communal organizations to shame."

Denials and Counter-Allegations

Communist Party of India (Marxist) area secretary M Kunhammed categorically denied any involvement with the viral video, stating that the recording has no connection with LDF and that nobody made such announcements from the party's official vehicles.

IUML leaders strongly refuted the campaign allegations, counter-accusing LDF of openly invoking communal narratives to secure votes through divisive tactics. They emphasized that their campaigning focuses on development issues rather than religious identity.

Historical Context of Communal Tensions in Perambra

This is not the first time Perambra has witnessed election-related controversies involving communal allegations. During previous Lok Sabha polls, the constituency was embroiled in the 'kafir screenshot' campaign against UDF candidate Shafi Parambil.

That particular screenshot was later confirmed to be fabricated and was initially circulated in social media groups linked to CPM. Police investigations into that case are reportedly still ongoing, adding another layer of complexity to the current allegations.

The Political Landscape and Candidates

LDF convener T P Ramakrishnan is the CPM candidate contesting from Perambra, while Fathima Thahiliya represents the UDF alliance. The controversy has intensified the already heated electoral battle in this crucial constituency.

The allegations have raised serious questions about campaign ethics and the maintenance of secular values in Kerala's political discourse. Both sides are now engaged in a war of words, with each accusing the other of violating the model code of conduct and resorting to divisive tactics.

As the election commission examines the complaints and the viral video continues to circulate online, this controversy threatens to dominate the final stages of campaigning in Perambra, potentially influencing voter perceptions and electoral outcomes in this closely watched constituency.
