Congress MP from Sivaganga, Karti P Chidambaram, has clarified that the demand for a share in power within the state is a longstanding expectation for any political party contesting elections. However, he emphasized that the immediate priority for the INDIA bloc alliance should be settling seat-sharing amicably and securing victory at the polls, deeming it too early to discuss ministerial berths.
Power Share Talk is Premature, Says Karti
Addressing reporters at the Trichy airport, Karti Chidambaram responded to recent remarks from some Congress functionaries about a share in power. He stated that such discussions are currently "too premature". The MP outlined a sequential approach, suggesting that settling seat-sharing is the first critical step, followed by the crucial task of winning the elections. Only after these milestones are achieved should talks about power distribution commence.
Using a cinematic analogy, Karti Chidambaram remarked, "We are just in the title song, why jump to the final scene?" He explained that every party entering the electoral fray naturally harbors expectations for a role in governance, calling it the "primary reason" why parties contest. He revealed that he himself had raised this issue approximately two years ago, indicating it is not a new demand.
Confidence in INDIA Bloc, Critique of AIADMK
Asserting the strength of the opposition alliance, Karti Chidambaram said the INDIA bloc led by Congress at the Centre and the DMK in Tamil Nadu remains a formidable force. He expressed confidence in the coalition's unity and its prospects in the upcoming electoral battle.
When questioned about Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's recent comment that voting for the AIADMK would effectively help elect a BJP government in the state, Karti Chidambaram concurred with the sentiment. He launched a sharp critique of the AIADMK, stating that the party can no longer be viewed as an independent entity.
Drawing a contrast with the past, he noted that historically, parties seeking an alliance with the AIADMK would approach them at their headquarters. "But now, ADMK goes to Delhi and seeks appointments," he said, implying a loss of autonomy. He described the AIADMK, despite its sizeable vote bank, as now "dancing to the tunes of Delhi," a clear reference to its perceived subservience to the BJP-led central government.
Election Focus Overwhelms Early Power Talks
The MP's statements serve to temporarily quiet internal murmurs about post-poll power dynamics within the alliance. By framing the power-share demand as a natural yet deferred expectation, he aims to keep the coalition's focus squarely on the immediate electoral challenges. His remarks reinforce the public message of INDIA bloc unity while simultaneously attempting to undermine the AIADMK by painting it as a proxy for the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
The overarching message from the Congress leader is clear: first win the election, then discuss the spoils. This strategic positioning is intended to prevent internal discord from derailing the alliance's campaign before it even begins, ensuring all energy is channeled towards defeating the common opponent.
