Karnataka Launches Major Women's Rights Awareness Drive
Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje announced on Saturday a comprehensive 10-day statewide awareness campaign focused on women's rights. This initiative is strategically timed in the context of the upcoming parliamentary discussions regarding the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill, which aims to enhance women's political representation through reservation.
Campaign Details and Political Context
The campaign is designed to educate and empower women across Karnataka ahead of a proposed special Parliament session dedicated to the women's reservation bill. Karandlaje expressed strong optimism that this effort will help identify and promote more women experts who can be fielded as candidates in future elections, thereby strengthening female participation in the democratic process.
Highlighting Karnataka's achievements, the minister pointed to the exemplary performance of women-led gram panchayats in the state, which have consistently excelled and received numerous awards for their governance and community development work.
Addressing potential political implications, Karandlaje clarified that the bill is unlikely to impact the ongoing election cycles. She also called for clarity from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge regarding his party's official stance on the legislation, emphasizing the need for bipartisan support on such a crucial issue.
Organizational efforts for the campaign will be spearheaded by BJP state Mahila Morcha president C Manjula. The activities will include large-scale conventions, extensive signature drives, and public rallies across all districts, commencing this Sunday at KR Pura.
Chief Minister Stresses Media Integrity and Public Trust
In a separate development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the 40th State Journalists' Conference in Bidar, where he reaffirmed the enduring public trust in newspapers as reliable sources of credible information. He personally endorsed this trust, noting that despite the rise of digital media, traditional print journalism continues to hold significant sway among the populace.
"Speculative journalism is extremely dangerous… What benefit does society get if a husband-wife quarrel is shown all day?" Siddaramaiah cautioned, urging journalists to avoid sensationalism and speculative reporting. He warned that an excessive focus on trivial or sensational issues could potentially harm societal cohesion and distract from more pressing matters.
Recalling the journalistic contributions of historical figures like BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi, the Chief Minister called on the media to act as a powerful voice for the voiceless and to actively promote social awareness and constitutional values in their reporting.
Deputy Speaker Lamani Breaks Down Over Forest Eviction Crisis
Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani became emotional during a zilla panchayat review meeting near Devagiri village, shedding tears while highlighting the distressing plight of villagers facing eviction from forest lands.
Lamani detailed that several settlements have existed near forest areas since before India's Independence, but are now being forcibly evicted after recent classifications placed them within reserved forest limits. He reported that First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against many families, compelling them to vacate their ancestral homes.
Specific cases mentioned include the displacement of residents from Guttal Tanda and Karur, with people in 22 additional villages across Karnataka facing similar eviction threats. Despite raising this critical issue consistently for over five years with various Union ministers and Members of Parliament, Lamani lamented that no concrete rehabilitation measures have been provided to the affected communities, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and hardship.
