Karnataka Cabinet Reshuffle: Multiple MLAs, Including Abbayya & Konaraddi, Jockey for Ministerial Posts
Karnataka MLAs lobby for ministerial berths in cabinet reshuffle

Political activity in Karnataka is intensifying as several legislators have begun openly lobbying for positions in a potential cabinet reshuffle. Multiple Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the ruling Congress party are publicly stating their cases for ministerial berths, highlighting community representation, seniority, and specific portfolio expertise as their key qualifications.

MLA Abbayya Champions Community Representation

Hubballi-Dharwad East MLA Prasad Abbayya has been vocal about his desire for a ministerial position, should a reshuffle occur. Abbayya, who is currently serving his third consecutive term as an MLA, revealed that he had previously requested a berth in the 2018 coalition government. He bases his claim on community representation, pointing out that the Chalavadi community from the Mumbai Karnataka region has not had a minister in the state cabinet since B Shankaranand's tenure ended in 1992.

"Since the people of my constituency have elected me for the third consecutive term, I have requested the party high command to allot a seat," Abbayya stated. He asserted his readiness to handle any portfolio effectively, citing his current performance as the chairman of the Karnataka State Slum Development Board, a role he has held since January 24, 2024.

Konaraddi Eyes Agriculture, Patil's Supporters Demand Berth

In a more specific demand, Navalgund constituency MLA NH Konaraddi has expressed his desire to hold the agriculture portfolio. Konaraddi, who was first elected as a JD(S) MLA in 2013 and now represents Congress from the same seat, believes his grassroots experience makes him ideal for the role.

"Since I have grassroots knowledge of farmers' issues and have been involved in agitations for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala and Mahadayi River water projects, I will bring major credit to the party by handling the portfolio effectively," Konaraddi claimed.

The lobbying extends beyond individual claims to district-level politics. In Gadag district, supporters of Ron MLA GS Patil are pushing for his induction into the cabinet. They argue that Patil, a four-time MLA and current chairperson of the Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited, deserves recognition for his experience.

Veerappa Tegginamani, a DSS leader in Ron, opined, "Congress should at least give due credit now by inducting him into the cabinet." He suggested a controversial solution if the party cannot allocate two berths to Gadag district: "The sitting minister HK Patil should sacrifice to make way for GS."

Complex Dynamics and Unusual Claims

The situation presents complex dynamics for the Congress leadership. Adding another layer is the sentiment among supporters of MLA Vinay Kulkarni, who is currently in jail. Despite his incarceration, his backers wish to see him return as a minister, indicating the deep-rooted loyalties and challenges in balancing various factions within the party.

These public pronouncements by sitting legislators put pressure on the party's decision-makers. A cabinet reshuffle, if it happens, will need to address these competing claims while maintaining regional balance, rewarding loyalty, and ensuring administrative efficiency. The demands highlight the ongoing negotiation and internal politicking that precedes any significant change in the state's ministerial lineup.

The coming weeks will reveal whether the party high command accommodates these specific portfolio requests, prioritizes community representation as argued by Abbayya, or opts for a completely different configuration to strengthen the government's political standing.
