DMK Leader Kanimozhi Launches Scathing Attack on AIADMK's Palaniswami
In a fiery campaign speech in Salem on Wednesday, DMK deputy general secretary and Tuticorin MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi launched a blistering critique against former chief minister and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, branding him as a figure defined by betrayal and declaring him unfit to serve as the leader of the opposition in Tamil Nadu.
Accusations of Betrayal and Leadership Failure
Kanimozhi asserted that Palaniswami has betrayed not only the state of Tamil Nadu but also his own political party and the individuals who have supported him throughout his career. She emphasized that this pattern of disloyalty has become his defining characteristic, undermining his credibility and effectiveness in public office.
"Betrayal has become the core identity of Edappadi Palaniswami," Kanimozhi stated during her address. "His actions have consistently shown a lack of commitment to the people and the principles he claims to uphold, making him entirely unsuitable for the critical role of opposition leader."
She pointed to the recent defection of former chief minister O Panneerselvam to the DMK as a direct consequence of Palaniswami's conduct, suggesting that his leadership has driven key allies away from the AIADMK.
Campaign Context and Political Remarks
Kanimozhi made these pointed comments while actively campaigning for DMK candidates R Rajendran and M Loganathan, who are contesting in the Salem North and Salem South constituencies, respectively. Her speech aimed to galvanize support for the DMK by highlighting perceived failures and missteps of the opposition.
She specifically criticized Palaniswami for remarks he made earlier on Wednesday during an election campaign event in Chennai's T Nagar area. At that gathering, Palaniswami had alleged that Chief Minister M K Stalin is "afraid of Delhi" and claimed that "the people of Tamil Nadu are suffering under a government led by someone who does not know how to govern."
Condemnation of Irresponsible Statements and Covid-19 Response
In response, Kanimozhi condemned Palaniswami's comments as irresponsible and lacking in humanity, particularly given his experience as a former chief minister and current opposition leader. She argued that such rhetoric is unbecoming of a senior political figure and detracts from substantive governance discussions.
Furthermore, Kanimozhi leveled serious allegations regarding the AIADMK government's performance during the Covid-19 pandemic under Palaniswami's leadership. She accused his administration of failing to adequately protect the citizens of Tamil Nadu, contrasting it with the DMK's efforts to stand by the people during the crisis.
"During the devastating Covid period, the AIADMK government led by Palaniswami left the people vulnerable and unsupported," she alleged. "In stark contrast, the DMK worked tirelessly to assist and safeguard the community, demonstrating true leadership and compassion."
Kanimozhi's remarks underscore the intensifying political rivalry in Tamil Nadu as election campaigns heat up, with both parties seeking to leverage past records and current statements to sway voter opinion in key constituencies like Salem.
