Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Kamal Haasan, while campaigning for DMK candidate V Senthilbalaji in Coimbatore South assembly constituency on Sunday, made a strong commitment to fight for 33% reservation for women in India. He emphasized that this initiative is a crucial duty he intends to pursue vigorously, highlighting his dedication to gender equality and political representation.
Parliamentary Strength and Delimitation Bill Defeat
During his speech on Raja Street, Kamal Haasan pointed to the recent parliamentary actions of MPs from Tamil Nadu, noting that they successfully demonstrated their collective power by defeating the delimitation bill. He framed this victory as a testament to the state's political influence and a stepping stone for future advocacy, particularly in advancing women's rights through legislative measures.
Criticism of Union Government and Metro Rail Projects
Kamal Haasan also directed sharp criticism at the Union government, accusing it of inconsistency in infrastructure development. He highlighted that while the government rejected Coimbatore's metro rail project citing the 2011 census, it simultaneously altered regulations to approve similar projects for cities like Patna and Agra. He urged the people of Coimbatore to question this disparity, asserting that the city's residents possess the awareness to hold authorities accountable for such decisions.
Political Allegations and DMK's Local Success
In his address, Kamal Haasan made veiled references to political opponents, suggesting that those aiming to dismantle the DMK are backed by a single "owner" from northern India, operating with that entity's financial and intellectual support. He contrasted this with the DMK's local achievements, crediting Senthilbalaji for the party's success in the previous local body elections, where DMK and its allies secured 96 out of 100 wards in the Coimbatore city corporation.
Confidence in Coimbatore's Electoral Future
Expressing optimism about the upcoming elections, Kamal Haasan noted that Chief Minister M K Stalin has entrusted Senthilbalaji with contesting in Coimbatore, viewing this as a strategic move. He confidently predicted that Coimbatore would emerge as a DMK stronghold, potentially rewriting Tamil Nadu's electoral history by fostering significant political change and setting a new precedent in the state's democratic landscape.
