Jharkhand Chief Minister Criticizes Central Government Over LPG Crisis
In Ranchi, Chief Minister Hemant Soren launched a sharp critique against the central government on Wednesday, addressing growing nationwide concerns about LPG shortages linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Reacting to reports of LPG woes in Jharkhand and across India, Soren expressed frustration over the handling of the situation.
"Incident Happens First, Information Comes Later": Soren's Critique
Hemant Soren stated, "In times of such crisis situations, usually everyone receives information beforehand. But here, the incident happens first and the information comes later, which is strange. Let us see what more they (the Centre) will show to the poor people of this country." He emphasized the severe impact on common citizens, particularly those relying on menial jobs, who he said can neither feed themselves nor support others due to the crisis.
JMM Accuses Modi Government of Policy Failures
Hemant Soren's party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), escalated the criticism by accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing the country. JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharjee highlighted the government's actions, noting that despite official claims of no crisis, it hiked LPG cylinder prices, restricted booking windows, and invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).
Bhattacharjee alleged, "It's the period of holy Ramzan. Also, several Hindu marriages are being held, but this government has once again pushed the country and its people into crises due to its failed foreign policy. PM's foreign policy is more inclined towards his personal interests rather than that of the country." He claimed this has strained relations with long-time allies like Russia and Iran.
The spokesperson further warned that in Ranchi, private mess and tiffin centers catering to students are on the verge of shutdown due to the LPG shortage, exacerbating the situation for vulnerable populations.
BJP Counters, Accuses Opposition of Spreading Panic
In response, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the JMM of spreading confusion and panic. BJP general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Pradeep Varma stated, "The same INDIA bloc partners spread falsehood on Covid-19 vaccine. Today, they are doing the same with LPG cylinders. The government is fully alert, and there is no shortage of petrol or gas in the country."
Varma explained that necessary legal procedures have been adopted to prevent black-marketing driven by misinformation, aiming to reassure the public about the availability of essential fuels.
Background and Context
The LPG shortage concerns have emerged against the backdrop of the West Asia conflict, which includes tensions involving Israel, Iran, and the United States. Recent developments, such as Iran targeting Israeli military intelligence and naval bases, and fresh explosions reported in Dubai, have heightened global anxieties, potentially impacting fuel supplies and prices.
This political clash in Jharkhand underscores broader national debates over governance, foreign policy, and crisis management during international conflicts.
