Jharkhand Budget 2026-27 Presented Amidst Political Clash

Ranchi witnessed a significant political showdown on Tuesday as Finance Minister Radha Krishana Kishore tabled the state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. The event triggered immediate and polarized reactions, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launching a sharp critique, labeling the financial plan as directionless and lacking vision.

Ruling Coalition Praises Budget's Inclusive Approach

In contrast, Chief Minister and JMM president Hemant Soren expressed strong confidence in the budget's potential. He emphasized that the proposals would have far-reaching effects, ensuring no section of society is overlooked. "Results of the proposals would be seen on the grounds soon," Soren stated, highlighting his optimism for tangible outcomes.

Congress minister Irfan Ansari echoed this sentiment, asserting that the budget would drive all-round development across Jharkhand. JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey detailed specific allocations aimed at social inclusion, including a gender budget of Rs 34,211 crore for women empowerment, a child budget of Rs 10,793 crore for children's welfare, Rs 1,000 crore for rural road construction, and Rs 730 crore under the Mukhyamantri Gram Setu Yojana. "These are clear indications of a comprehensive social development push in this budget," Pandey added.

Ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also welcomed the budget, with state party spokesman Kailash Yadav terming it historic. He specifically thanked the chief minister for the decision to establish Baba Saheb Ambedkar University in Chatra district, viewing it as a milestone for education and social justice.

Mixed Reactions from Left Parties

CPI ML state secretary Manoj Bhakt offered a cautious welcome, acknowledging the budget's positive aspects but pointing out a lack of significant increase in allocation for the Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojna. He warned that this could create difficulties in enrolling new beneficiaries, potentially hindering welfare efforts. Meanwhile, CPI state executive committee member Ajay Singh described the budget as people-centric, aligning with broader progressive goals.

Opposition BJP Levels Serious Allegations

Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi accused the government of misleading the public regarding fund releases from the Centre. He claimed that by February 14, the central government had provided 89% of Jharkhand's share in taxes, but the state had failed to effectively utilize these funds, raising questions about fiscal management.

BJP state president and Rajya Sabha member Aditya Sahu raised pointed criticisms, noting that while the budget mentions a 'baal budget' for children, it overlooks the issue of thousands of missing children in the state. "The government has talked about gender budget but there is no provision for preventing rape, murder, and other crimes against women," Sahu argued. He further questioned why disbursements for scholarships, widow pensions, and old-age pensions are pending if there is no fund shortage.

Former deputy chief minister and Ajsu P chief Sudesh Mahto alleged that the government is attempting to deceive the public by increasing the budgetary amount by approximately Rs 10,000 crore compared to the current budget. He highlighted that by January 31, 2026, only half of the allocated funds in the current budget had been spent, which he claimed has stalled development projects across the state.

The budget presentation has set the stage for intense political discourse in Jharkhand, with debates likely to focus on implementation, transparency, and social impact in the coming months.
