Jharkhand Government Unveils Major Tourism and Sports Funding in 2026-27 Budget

The Jharkhand government has made a significant financial commitment to boost its tourism, art, culture, sports, and youth affairs sectors. In the Abua Dishom Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, presented on Tuesday, an allocation of Rs 361.67 crore has been earmarked for the department. This substantial investment is strategically aimed at promoting eco-tourism, enhancing adventure infrastructure, and advancing sports development across the state, with the overarching goal of generating employment opportunities and improving local livelihoods.

Comprehensive Tourism Infrastructure Projects Announced

A series of ambitious tourism infrastructure projects have been unveiled as part of this budgetary initiative, spanning multiple districts. These projects are designed to attract visitors and create sustainable economic benefits for communities.

  • In Ranchi district, the plan includes the construction of glass bridges at the scenic Dassam and Jonha waterfalls, along with a new ropeway at Hundru.
  • Ramgarh district will see tourism development at Rajrappa, the installation of a skywalk at Patratu, and the introduction of solar-powered boats and a floating restaurant at the Patratu reservoir.
  • For Latehar district, the government will build a glass dome tower at Koel View Point in Netarhat and a skywalk at Magnolia Point.
  • Eco-tourism circuits are set to be developed at Perwaghagh waterfall and the Pandu-Pudding picnic spot in Khunti.
  • Additional proposals include ropeway development at Koleshwari hill in Chatra, and tourism enhancements at Punasi dam in Deoghar and Malay dam in Palamu.

Government's Vision and Financial Growth

Finance Minister Radha Krishana Kishore emphasized that the primary objective of this allocation is to promote eco-tourism and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities while strengthening the overall tourism infrastructure. He stated, "The government's focus on tourism is to kindle untapped potential and generate livelihoods." This marks a notable increase from the previous fiscal year, with the allocation rising from Rs 336.64 crore in 2025-26 to Rs 361.67 crore in 2026-27. This represents an increase of Rs 25.03 crore, or a growth of 7.43%, reflecting the state's heightened commitment to these sectors.

Sports Development and Infrastructure Upgrades

Beyond tourism, the budget also prioritizes sports development. The department currently operates 41 residential sports training centres and 102 day-boarding centres, with plans to expand this network further. Key infrastructure upgrades have been approved, including the modernization of the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi and the installation of an eight-lane synthetic track in Dumka. These initiatives aim to nurture athletic talent and provide state-of-the-art facilities for sports enthusiasts.

Ensuring Long-Term Sustainability

Tourism Secretary Mukesh Kumar highlighted the importance of consistent upkeep and management for sustaining tourist interest. He noted that the success of these projects will depend on ongoing maintenance and effective operational strategies to ensure they remain attractive and functional over time. This focus on sustainability underscores the government's holistic approach to development, aiming not only to build infrastructure but also to maintain it for long-term economic and social benefits.
