INLD Chief Abhay Chautala Accuses Congress, BJP of Failing Jats on Reservation
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president Abhay Singh Chautala has launched a scathing attack on successive Haryana governments, accusing both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing the Jat community on the critical issue of reservation. Speaking at a Jat Sevak Sangh event in Hisar on Tuesday, Chautala claimed that political exploitation has replaced genuine action regarding the community's long-standing demand for inclusion in the other backward classes (OBC) category.
Congress Promised Reservation as Electoral Strategy
Chautala specifically targeted the former Congress administration led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, alleging that ahead of the 2014 assembly elections, the party promised reservation to five castes—including Jats—purely as an electoral strategy. He noted that while a special assembly session was convened to announce a 10% quota for these communities, the implementation was never effective or sustainable.
"The Congress government made hollow promises to secure votes," Chautala asserted, "but when it came to actual implementation, they failed to deliver concrete results for the Jat community."
BJP Government Accused of Inaction and Delays
Turning his critique toward the incumbent BJP government, Chautala stated that the community was "forced to protest" in 2016 due to government inaction on the reservation issue. He claimed that under the leadership of former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the matter remained stalled despite various assurances and promises.
"The government spoke of forming commissions and holding consultations," Chautala said, "but for two years, only meetings were held without any concrete outcome emerging."
He added that the 2016 agitation resulted in the tragic loss of 36 lives without yielding a lasting legislative solution for Jat reservation demands.
BJP Legislator Calls for Administrative Reform
The event was presided over by BJP legislator Sunil Sangwan, who shifted the focus to administrative reform while addressing newly selected IAS and IPS officers. Sangwan urged the future bureaucrats to ensure efficient governance, arguing that the need for political intervention in routine matters indicates a systemic breakdown in public administration.
"If a common citizen needs a politician's recommendation for legitimate work, it reflects a failure of the system," Sangwan emphasized during his address.
He called for increased transparency and accountability in public service, invoking the legacies of influential Haryanvi leaders such as Sir Chhotu Ram, Tau Devi Lal, and Bansi Lal to inspire the officers to prioritize state development and public welfare.
Political Implications in Haryana
The strong criticism from the INLD chief comes at a time when reservation politics remains a sensitive issue in Haryana. The Jat community, which constitutes a significant portion of the state's population, has been demanding OBC status for decades to access reservation benefits in government jobs and educational institutions.
Chautala's remarks highlight the ongoing political tensions surrounding this issue and suggest that reservation will likely remain a key electoral issue in future state elections. The INLD leader's criticism of both major political parties indicates his party's attempt to position itself as the genuine advocate for Jat interests in Haryana's competitive political landscape.
