Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Lives of Two Young Cousins in Hyderabad

In a devastating turn of events, two cousins lost their lives in a drowning incident near a lake in Maheshwaram, Hyderabad. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening and culminated with the recovery of their bodies on Monday, leaving the local community in deep sorrow.

Details of the Deceased and the Incident

The deceased have been identified as Rishi, aged 6, and Bhadrinath, aged 8, both residents of KC Tanda in Maheshwaram. Rishi was a Class 1 student, while Bhadrinath studied in Class 2 at a local government school, highlighting the young age at which their lives were tragically cut short.

According to police reports, the boys left their homes to play on Sunday evening but failed to return, prompting immediate concern from their family members. After an initial search of the neighbourhood proved futile, the authorities were alerted, setting off a chain of events in the investigation.

Search Operation and Recovery Efforts

During the preliminary inquiry, locals informed the police that the children were last seen near the Maheshwara statue beside Kotwal Cheruvu, a lake in the area. This crucial piece of information led to a concentrated search effort around the waterbody.

The search operation was a collaborative endeavour involving:

  • Villagers from the local community
  • Expert swimmers with knowledge of the area
  • Fire department personnel equipped for rescue missions
  • Police teams coordinating the efforts

Using floodlights to navigate the darkness, the teams scoured the lake and its surroundings late into the night. Despite their persistent efforts, the children could not be located during this initial phase.

The operation resumed at first light on Monday morning, with renewed vigour and hope. Tragically, both bodies were eventually fished out from the lake, confirming the worst fears of the families and rescuers. Maheshwaram inspector H Venkateshwarulu provided these details, underscoring the sombre outcome of the search.

Legal Proceedings and Aftermath

In response to complaints filed by the grieving families, the police have registered a case under Section 194 of the BNSS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Samhita), initiating a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. This legal step aims to ascertain any negligence or factors that may have contributed to the incident.

Following the recovery, the bodies underwent a postmortem examination as part of standard procedural requirements. Once completed, they were handed over to the families for last rites, allowing them to begin the painful process of closure amidst their loss.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by water bodies, especially for young children, and has sparked conversations about safety measures in residential areas near lakes in Hyderabad and beyond.
