Hyderabad Police Commissionerates Set for Major Restructuring and Renaming
Hyderabad Police Commissionerates to be Rejigged, Jurisdiction Expanded

The Telangana government is embarking on a significant administrative reshuffle of the police setup in Hyderabad. Following the recent restructuring of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), authorities are now finalizing plans to reorganize the city's three police commissionerates. This exercise will lead to an expansion of the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate's jurisdiction and a complete renaming of existing zones.

Redrawing Boundaries and Expanding Jurisdiction

According to official sources, the existing Hyderabad Police Commissionerate will see its area of control increase substantially. Its boundary, currently marked by Chandrayangutta, is set to extend all the way to Shamshabad. This expansion means that several critical and sensitive installations, most notably the Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport, will fall under the direct purview of the Hyderabad police.

To facilitate this change, the Rajendranagar and Shamshabad divisions will be carved out from the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate and merged into the Hyderabad commissionerate. Consequently, both the Cyberabad and Rachakonda commissionerates will shrink in size. Cyberabad will be reduced from five zones to three, while Rachakonda will go from four zones to three.

A New Look with New Names

A major part of the restructuring involves renaming all police zones across the three commissionerates, doing away with the existing directional nomenclature. In Hyderabad, the old names like South, North, East, West, South-East, and South-West zones will become history.

The new proposed names for Hyderabad's zones are:

  • West Zone (covering Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills) will become Khairatabad Zone.
  • South Zone will be renamed Charminar Zone.
  • South-West Zone will be known as Golconda Zone.
  • North Zone will be called Secunderabad Zone.

Similarly, the zones in the Cyberabad limits will be called Serlingampally, Qutbullapur, and Kukatpally. In the Rachakonda commissionerate, the three new zones will be Uppal, Malkajgiri, and LB Nagar. The Bhongir zone will be made a separate unit with a Superintendent of Police-rank officer in charge.

Future Plans and Infrastructure

Beyond the immediate rejig, the government is also planning for the city's growth. Sources indicate a proposal to create a brand new police commissionerate for the upcoming "Future City" project, highlighting a forward-looking approach to urban security planning.

To manage the expanded jurisdiction and increased workload, the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate will be strengthened with additional personnel across various ranks, particularly at senior levels. Meanwhile, the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate is set to get a modern, new headquarters in Medipally, which is expected to be operational by early 2026.

This comprehensive restructuring aims to streamline policing, align police boundaries with urban growth, and improve administrative efficiency in India's major tech hub. The final implementation will follow the formal approval of these detailed proposals.
