A critical road artery connecting the Malnad and coastal regions of Karnataka has been plunged into chaos following a devastating landslide at Hulikal Ghat. The incident, which occurred two weeks ago during construction activities near a treacherous hairpin bend, resulted in the tragic deaths of three laborers. In response, the Shivamogga district administration was compelled to impose a complete suspension of all vehicular traffic along this vital stretch, effectively severing a primary transportation link.
Stopgap Bus System Draws Ire for Poor Planning and Physical Hardship

Under this makeshift protocol, buses originating from Shivamogga, Hosanagar, and Thirthahalli terminate their journeys at the landslide site and return. Conversely, buses from the coastal side only proceed as far as a point below the Chandikadevi Temple, near Balebare Falls. Local residents and activists have sounded the alarm on severe safety lapses. They highlight the complete absence of essential safety features like railings and protective roofing along the steps. This makes the passage exceptionally hazardous for vulnerable groups including the elderly, young children, and individuals burdened with heavy luggage.

The disruption is causing profound distress, particularly for patients requiring urgent medical care. Activist Chirag has accused officials of negligence, noting that the road closure forces many to take lengthy, time-consuming detours.
