Haryana's Transport Minister, Anil Vij, declared on Saturday that the state government has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a recent accident involving a state roadways bus in Karnal. The minister made this announcement while speaking in Ambala, firmly stating that accountability will be established once the inquiry is complete.
Strict Advisories for Foggy Conditions
Minister Vij emphasized that clear safety directives are already operational to manage traffic during periods of low visibility. He pointed out that an official advisory explicitly restricts the speed of buses and other vehicles to a maximum of 60 kilometers per hour when fog is present. This rule is designed to prevent collisions and safeguard passenger lives.
"In view of the Karnal incident, orders have been issued to investigate the accident," Vij stated. He issued a stern warning, adding, "If it is found during the probe that the driver was driving at a speed of more than 60 kmph in dense fog, strict action will be taken."
Accountability and Driver Sensitization
The minister assured that the inquiry would be followed by decisive measures. "There will be an inquiry, action will follow, and the punishment prescribed under the rules will be imposed," he affirmed. Vij also made a direct appeal to all drivers of Haryana Roadways buses, urging them to adhere strictly to the safety advisories, especially during the winter fog season, to avoid mishaps and ensure commuter safety.
Furthermore, he revealed that officials from the transport department have been directed to ensure that every driver is thoroughly briefed and reminded about the mandated speed limits and other essential precautionary steps that must be taken during adverse weather conditions.
Political Jab Over MGNREGA Remark
During the interaction, the minister also responded to a query regarding a comment made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh. Singh had reportedly made a remark on the proposed name change of MGNREGA, playing on the words "Ram" and "haram."
When asked about this, Anil Vij retorted, "Yes, it is written there. That is why we are of Ram, and they are of haram." This exchange highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding the issue.
The state government's swift move to order a probe underscores its stated commitment to road safety, particularly during the hazardous winter months when fog significantly increases the risk of accidents on northern India's highways.
