Gopalapuram Residents Demand Urgent Action on Chronic Traffic Chaos
Residents of Chennai's Gopalapuram neighborhood are raising urgent alarms about persistent traffic problems that have turned their daily lives into a frustrating ordeal. The core issues identified include rampant unregulated parking, dangerous wrong-side driving practices, and severely congested narrow roads that collectively create hazardous conditions throughout the area.
School Zone Becomes Traffic Nightmare
The situation is particularly critical because Gopalapuram hosts more than seven educational institutions concentrated along Avvai Shanmugam Salai, Padmavathi Road, Conron Smith Road, and Ganesh Street. According to local residents, entering and exiting their own neighborhoods has become extremely difficult even during non-school hours due to excessive vehicle parking on already limited road space.
"For a brief period, authorities made Avvai Shanmugam Salai a one-way street, which provided some relief. Unfortunately, that decision has now been reversed," explained K Ravichandran, a long-time resident of the area. The problem escalates dramatically during school hours when traffic volume peaks.

On a recent Monday, observers counted at least fifty vehicles illegally parked along roadways and sidewalks with no visible police presence to enforce regulations. Parents picking up their children from school have resorted to dangerous wrong-side driving maneuvers, causing complete traffic gridlock at critical times.
"Approximately twenty vehicles, including commercial vans and private cars, remain parked on the roads twenty-four hours a day," reported Sivakaminathan, president of the Jeyapore Colony Residents Association. "These illegally parked vehicles reduce carriageways to single lanes, promote anti-social activities, obstruct residents' sightlines, and prevent municipal workers from performing street cleaning duties."
Even designated parking areas meant for temporary use are being occupied by these permanently parked vehicles, according to the residents' association president.
Safety Concerns Reach Critical Levels
The parking chaos creates multiple safety hazards that extend beyond mere inconvenience. Pedestrians, particularly school children, face significant risks as they navigate through reckless traffic patterns after school hours. Emergency response capabilities have also been compromised.
"If any medical emergency or fire incident occurs in our neighborhood, neither ambulances nor fire engines would be able to reach affected locations due to the completely blocked roads," warned Sivakaminathan, highlighting the life-threatening implications of the current situation.
Infrastructure Changes Add to Controversy
Some residents have pointed to recent pavement construction projects as contributing factors to the worsening congestion. Specifically, pavement work along DAV Boys School has further reduced available road space according to certain community members.
However, an architect involved with the pavement project offered a different perspective: "Traffic movement absolutely needs proper regulation in this area. The newly constructed pavements have actually made the environment safer for students walking to and from school."
Police Response and Long-Term Solutions
A senior traffic police officer acknowledged the current enforcement challenges, explaining that personnel had been temporarily diverted to Mylapore for chariot festival duties. "Under normal circumstances, officers are deployed daily to regulate traffic and parking violations in Gopalapuram," the officer stated.
The officer emphasized the need for sustainable solutions: "We require comprehensive, long-term approaches to address these persistent issues. The police department plans to consult with residents and other stakeholders to develop effective strategies for improving traffic management in the area."
