Goa Family Picnic Ends in Tragedy as Siblings Drown in Creek

A devastating incident unfolded in Goa over the weekend, resulting in the loss of two young lives from a family in Curchorem. The tragedy occurred during a family outing to Canaguinim beach, where an 8-year-old boy drowned in a creek connected to the beach, and his 17-year-old sister, Sanika, succumbed after jumping in to rescue him.

Details of the Heartbreaking Incident

According to Cuncolim Police Inspector Diogo Gracias, the family of five, including two minors accompanied by their mother, left Curchorem at approximately 1 PM on Sunday for a picnic. The incident took place around 4 PM at the beach, where the creek poses a hidden danger.

When the young boy ventured into the creek and began drowning, his sister Sanika witnessed the emergency. Instead of alerting other family members, she immediately jumped into the water in a brave attempt to save her brother. Tragically, she was unable to rescue him and found herself struggling in the water as well.

Rescue Efforts and Medical Treatment

Locals at the beach noticed Sanika drowning and raised an alarm, alerting her family who rushed to the spot. After being pulled from the water, Sanika informed her family that her brother was still submerged. A swift search by locals located the boy in the creek.

Both minors were rushed to the primary health centre in Bali, where doctors declared the boy dead upon arrival. Sanika, experiencing breathing difficulties, was transferred to the South Goa district hospital for urgent care.

Inspector Gracias reported that her condition initially stabilized, leading to her transfer to Goa Medical College in Bambolim for further treatment. However, despite medical efforts, she passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment.

Police Investigation and Aftermath

The Cuncolim police have registered a case of unnatural death in connection with this tragic event. Postmortem examinations were conducted by doctors, and the bodies were subsequently handed over to the grieving family for final rites.

This incident highlights the potential hazards of natural water bodies, especially during recreational outings, and serves as a somber reminder of the importance of water safety and vigilance.
