Goa CM Pramod Sawant Alarms Over Tourist Reckless Driving, Calls for Action
Goa CM Warns on Tourist Reckless Driving, Demands Action

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant voiced serious worries on Friday about irresponsible driving by tourists across Goa's roadways. He stated that numerous visitors operate vehicles without adhering to basic safety regulations, which plays a major role in causing accidents and deaths.

Assembly Debates Road Safety Crisis

Responding to a private member's resolution proposed by MLA Antonio Vas in the state assembly, Sawant highlighted that tourists driving personal cars or using rental services contribute heavily to road mishaps. The assembly session saw intense reactions from lawmakers concerning the sharp increase in road rage and reckless driving incidents.

Resolution for Stricter Measures

Vas moved the resolution pressing the government to implement harsh actions against offenders. He advocated for bolstered enforcement via improved traffic surveillance, speed detection systems, and CCTV camera networks.

Opposition Leader's Grave Warning

Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao depicted a dire scenario, remarking that "people are dying like mosquitoes on Goa's roads." He noted that 40% of fatalities involve young individuals, blaming the situation on "weak deterrence" and "ineffective policing."

CM's Acknowledgment and Steps Taken

The Chief Minister admitted that while accident figures dropped in 2025 relative to 2024, rash and drunken driving persist as severe problems. Sawant confirmed the installation of speed violation cameras at multiple locations, with automated challans being dispatched to violators.

This ongoing debate underscores the urgent need for comprehensive road safety reforms in Goa to protect both residents and visitors.
