Gen Z Candidate Kunki Chowdhury Enters Assam Political Arena Against BJP Veteran
In a bold move that signals a generational shift in Assam's political landscape, 27-year-old Kunki Chowdhury is stepping into the electoral fray with the firebrand energy characteristic of Gen Z. Armed with a master's degree in educational leadership from University College London and a background deeply rooted in community service, Chowdhury is challenging BJP's seasoned cadre in the newly carved Guwahati Central constituency, previously known as Guwahati West.
Educational Background and Political Entry
Kunki Chowdhury completed her bachelor's degree in business administration with a specialization in family business and entrepreneurship before pursuing her master's at the Institute of Education and Society, University College London, graduating just last year. For the past five to six years, she has been actively involved with her family-run non-profit society, which manages several educational institutions across Assam.
"I never imagined entering politics," Chowdhury told TOI. "My work in education and community service kept me closely connected to the ground. When the opportunity came from AJP to contest from Guwahati Central, I felt it was the right moment to step forward. It offered a larger platform to serve and contribute more meaningfully to the people of Assam."
Choosing AJP Over Other Political Parties
The Congress-led opposition alliance has fielded Chowdhury through its key ally, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), against BJP's Vijay Kumar Gupta, who has worked for the party for several decades. Chowdhury explained her decision to join AJP, citing the party's vision captured in the motto "Assam first, forever and always" as deeply resonating with her own commitment.
"Many political parties speak about identity. However, I feel BJP's approach to identity often takes a more divisive tone. In contrast, AJP's perspective is more inclusive," she added, highlighting the ideological alignment that drew her to the party.
Focus on Real Ground Work and Development Issues
Chowdhury emphasized that while money and power are often associated with politics, she believes in delivering real work on the ground. She pointed out that people in Assam are frustrated and want genuine development with visible progress in their constituencies.
"I feel the alliance of Congress and five other political parties is committed to that purpose. Their vision is centred on working for the people and addressing their needs. With this approach, I am confident that we will put up a strong and meaningful fight," she stated.
On specific development concerns, Chowdhury noted that basic public infrastructure remains overlooked, with little real improvement in:
- Garbage management
- Drainage systems
- Primary healthcare facilities
- Government schools
She stressed that these areas need better planning and resource allocation to address the growing needs of constituents.
The Gen Z Perspective in Politics
As a representative of the younger generation, Chowdhury believes that Gen Z candidates bring fresh ideas and innovative approaches to state governance. "The older generation of leaders has certainly contributed a lot, but I've observed a growing gap between governance and the public. Younger leaders tend to be more present on the ground, more responsive, and more open to engaging directly with people," she explained.
Regarding educational qualifications in politics, Chowdhury acknowledged that being well-qualified is an added advantage for candidates, though she emphasized that passion and commitment matter most. "Being highly-qualified is not the most essential requirement, as the passion and commitment of a leader matter most," she clarified, balancing her academic credentials with practical political wisdom.
With her motto of "real work on the ground" and the backing of the Congress-AJP alliance, Kunki Chowdhury now carries the hopes of the opposition into one of Assam's most closely watched electoral battles, promising a contest that blends youthful energy with substantive policy focus.
