Kerala Electoral Authorities Take Action Against BJP Candidate for Communal Campaign Video
The office of Kerala's Chief Electoral Officer, Rathan U Kelkar, has formally initiated legal proceedings against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate B Gopalakrishnan, who is contesting from the Guruvayur constituency. This decisive action follows the circulation of a controversial campaign video that allegedly breaches established electoral conduct regulations.
Police Case Registered Under Electoral Laws
In a significant development on Sunday, the Guruvayur police registered a formal case against Gopalakrishnan. The First Information Report (FIR) cites violations under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 125 of the People's Representation Act. The complaint was officially lodged by Sheeba S, the Returning Officer for the Guruvayur constituency, triggering the police investigation.
Authorities have determined that the video shared by the BJP candidate contravenes specific provisions of the Model Code of Conduct. These provisions explicitly prohibit seeking votes based on caste or communal sentiments and strictly bar the use of religious institutions—including churches, temples, and other places of worship—for election campaigning purposes. Following a directive from the District Collector, the contentious video has been removed from all social media platforms.

In his statement, Gopalakrishnan highlighted that despite Hindus constituting approximately 48% of Guruvayur's population, neither the Left nor the Right political fronts have elected a Hindu MLA to the state assembly in the past five decades. He emotionally declared that he had come to Guruvayur from the Kodungallur temple, claiming to have "heard the call of Lord Guruvayurappan" and describing his candidacy as a divine mission.
The BJP candidate further asserted, "For the past 50 years, the land of Guruvayurappan has been in the clutches of temple plunderers, temple opponents, and communal religious nationalists." He urged voters to join him in what he framed as a sacred endeavor to liberate Guruvayur from these forces, explicitly linking his electoral bid to religious mobilization.

The FIR accuses Gopalakrishnan of conducting an election campaign that deliberately triggered religious feelings and incited communal division among the electorate.
