Shrikant Pangarkar has filed his nomination as an independent candidate for the upcoming Jalna Municipal Corporation elections.
From Local Councillor to Terror Accused: Pangarkar's Political Journey
Shrikant Pangarkar is no stranger to local politics in Jalna. His political career began with the undivided Shiv Sena, where he served as a member of the local council from 2001 to 2006. However, after being denied a ticket by the party in 2011, he shifted his allegiance to the right-wing Hindu Janjagruti Samiti.
His trajectory took a sharp turn in August 2018, when the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested him. He was linked to a state-wide case involving the seizure of explosives and arms. As a result, authorities charged him under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), India's primary anti-terror law.
The most serious allegation against him is his alleged involvement in the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh. Lankesh was shot dead outside her home in Bengaluru on 5 September 2017, a killing that sparked nationwide outrage and a fierce debate on free speech and political violence. Pangarkar was granted bail in this case by the Karnataka High Court on 4 September 2024.
The Jalna Electoral Battle and Political Controversy
Pangarkar is now contesting for the Ward 13 seat in the Jalna Municipal Corporation polls scheduled for 15 January 2026. He will face candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other political outfits.
A significant aspect of this election is the stance of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The party has chosen not to field a candidate against Pangarkar in this ward. This decision follows a brief but controversial period in late 2024 when Pangarkar joined the Shinde-led Sena.
