Gadkari Urges 75 Playgrounds for NMC's 75th Year, Advises Against Tax Hikes
Gadkari: 75 Playgrounds for NMC's 75th Year, No Tax Hikes

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Proposes 75 Playgrounds for NMC's 75th Anniversary

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has called for meaningful initiatives to commemorate the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) 75th year, suggesting the development of 75 playgrounds as a fitting tribute. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony for former mayors and deputy mayors at NMC headquarters, Gadkari emphasized that many impactful works can be undertaken without requiring substantial financial resources.

Fiscal Prudence and Tax Policy Recommendations

Regarding the upcoming civic budget, Gadkari stated he would offer suggestions when the new standing committee chairperson prepares it. He strongly advised the administration against increasing property tax at present, noting that outstanding property tax and water bills have collectively surpassed Rs 1,200 crore.

"If you must raise taxes, first recover pending dues from defaulters," Gadkari cautioned, highlighting that tax hikes typically burden honest taxpayers while habitual defaulters often escape scrutiny.

Honoring Civic Legacy and Leadership

The felicitation ceremony, organized to mark NMC's Amrit Mahotsav foundation year, saw prominent attendance including:

  • Mayor Neeta Thakre
  • Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed
  • Leader of the House Balya Borkar
  • Opposition leader Sanjay Mahakalkar
  • MLAs Pravin Datke, Krishna Khopde, Mohan Mate, Vikas Thakre, and Sandeep Joshi
  • Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari
  • Additional Commissioners Vasumana Pant and Vaishnavi B

Former mayors including Kunda Vijaykar, Dayashankar Tiwari, Vasundhara Masurkar, Pandurang Hivarkar, Archana Dehankar, Anil Sole, Nanda Jichkar, Rajesh Tambe, and Kishor Dorle were honored alongside former deputy mayors. Family members of deceased former office-bearers also attended the occasion.

Challenges of Municipal Governance

Gadkari acknowledged all former office-bearers' contributions to Nagpur's development and urged new leadership to transform NMC into a model civic body through improved public services. He described the corporator's role as "the most difficult," noting that while becoming an MLA, MP, or minister might be easier, corporators face daily citizen demands from early morning, often without adequate funding.

"Even when funds are sanctioned, procedural delays by officials create significant hurdles," Gadkari observed, highlighting administrative challenges in municipal governance.

Political Responses and Commitments

MLA Vikas Thakre urged corporators and office-bearers to safeguard their rights and take firm action against corrupt officials. Mayor Neeta Thakre assured that Gadkari's advice would be implemented and issued warnings to officials accordingly. Former mayor Dayashankar Tiwari highlighted developmental works accomplished during his tenure, showcasing NMC's historical achievements.

Gadkari's proposals come at a critical juncture for NMC, balancing celebration of its 75-year legacy with practical governance challenges and fiscal responsibility. The emphasis on playground development reflects a focus on community infrastructure, while the tax recovery recommendation addresses persistent revenue collection issues affecting municipal finances.
